The northern plains nomads came each fall to the Missouri River Villages. In the beginning of June, there arrive at the great fort on the bank of the river of the Mandan
La Verendrye in 1739 said:  “They bring dressed skins trimmed and ornamented with plumage and porcupine quills, painted in various colors, also white buffalo skins, and the Mandan give them in exchange grain and beans of which they have an ample supply”  (fall of 1738)

Nov 15th  National Buffalo Museum Announces Passing of Rare Albino Bison White Cloud

Jamestown, ND – November 15, 2016 – With deep sadness, the National Buffalo Museum announces the passing of White Cloud, the rare albino buffalo who lived with the museum's herd for almost two decades. White Cloud died peacefully of old age on Monday, November 14, 2016.

White Cloud was born on the Shirek Buffalo Ranch near Michigan, North Dakota, in 1996 and came to live with the herd at the National Buffalo Museum in 1997. She gave birth to 11 calves during her time in Jamestown, including Dakota Miracle, a rare white bull. She returned home to the Shirek Buffalo Ranch in May of 2016.

White Cloud was beloved by local residents and attracted an estimated 3 million visitors to Jamestown. White bison are exceedingly rare and are considered sacred to indigenous peoples of North America.

“To me, White Cloud was more than a tourist attraction. She drew many, many people to the community, but more than that, she brought the community together with White Cloud Days, parades, and special Native American events. She will be missed by the Museum, our city, and by all the travelers that could look to the North and view her as they drove along the I-94 interstate pasture” said Don Williams, President of the National Buffalo Museum’s board.

There will not be a formal memorial service for White Cloud, but the museum encourages those who wish to share their memories, stories and photos on social media using #WhiteCloud.

Plans are being made to bring White Cloud back to the museum as a full body mount display. With your support, she will be preserved for future generations. Please send donations to the White Cloud Preservation and Memorial Fund, c/o National Buffalo Museum, 500 17th St. SE, Jamestown, ND, 58401.

Southern Plains Pointers: November 2016

Fast Times Where the Buffalo Roam

Everything is happening all at once and my advice is to: get ready – get set – & SLOW DOWN.  In the southern plains we tend to work herds later in the year than in the north, mostly because our weather cooperates and the calves tend to be heavier and more able to leave their mother seamlessly.  Our cool season grasses and other forages also tend to kick into gear about now, so working to early may interrupt some late breeding. Personally I consider a late bred cow half full, rather than half empty even though the young ‘off-season’ calves slow down herd works considerably. Today’s market pretty much dictates that we give every cow, every chance - to reproduce.

My attempt at levity by saying ready/set – slow down, is meant to convey the utility of taking your responsibility of setting up a bison work for success very seriously. Ideally you have notes from previous herd works to reflect on and solve reoccurring failures, and if not, you should have mental notes to serve that purpose. Mental notes are never as good as documentation, which I strongly suggest. When you actually document failures, you might be surprised what you see and what you can improve at very low cost when given the time to consider solutions deeply. It is always good to fully analyze herd works after the fact. Be hard on yourself [never blame the buffalo] and it will pay off.
The market this year has begun and it’s aggressive. The response to bison products is great, and the excitement from new producers is high.  Personally I am concerned when prices paid, do not calculate with sustainable outcomes, but It’s hard to cuss it when you’re selling, and when prices of the past have been less than sustainable. In my opinion, greed is the only wrong choice. By that I mean; animal health and quality property sold to the buyer, should be affordable to include and expected in bison offerings today. I also feel that while the sun shines, and hay making is good, we should seek out opportunities to become part of positive things for the entire industry, albeit niche or cottage. You are part of something special if you raise American bison – so celebration by doing all you can for the big picture and you just might be helping yourself just as much as others that make up the industry …

Agri-Trade Show
Red Deer, AB

For the fifth year, the Bison Producers of Alberta had their Bison Booth at the largest Agricultural Trade Show in the province.  The dates this year were Wednesday, November 9 through to Saturday, November 12th - all of which came with warm temperatures and no snow.

It is estimated over 10,000 people walk through the buildings at the Westerner Exhibition Grounds at this Trade Show, and at least 1,000 of them stopped at the BPA Booth - over that many names were entered for the draw prize of a beautiful gift basket donated by Big Bend Bison Market.
The primary purpose of our participation in this Trade Show is to reach more of the rural population, encouraging them to raise bison and increase supply.  It was validating to have six very serious people over the four days stop by for lengthy talks about getting into the bison industry, taking away with them the Bison Producer's Handbook and placing their names on our e-mail list to obtain future updates.
The secondary purpose is to connect with the consumer who is looking 'where to buy' bison meat, and how to best cook our lean product.   Cooking Booklets on just that, and numerous recipe cards were eagerly picked up by the family chefs.
Bison producer Yvonne Mills of YR Bison Ranch helped to mann the booth on Wednesday, enthusiastically discussing both bison production and bison meat with all those that stopped by.   Yvonne and her husband Rob began their bison ranch with no previous livestock experience, growing their operation to now include a small store on their place and selling their government inspected bison meat directly to the consumer.

On Thursday, BPA Director Steven Lunty (with Canadian Rangeland Bison) joined Linda at the Bison Booth, offering attendees a knowledgeable perspective into finishing aspects of production and marketing ideas.   The heritage item RCMP Buffalo Coat on display garnered a great deal of attention - and of course Steven had to model it for us!  (He discovered how heavy it is, but said no doubt would be warm in a blizzard.)
It was Linda, and her bison enthusiast friend Judy, that met with the crowds for Friday and Saturday -  agreeing the long four days had once again provided a positive awareness for the industry.
