In the spirit of Halloween, here's a little ghostly report of the slaughtered bison herd, the last in Pennsylvania. It was written in 1911.
A PENNSYLVANIA BISON HUNT
A REMINISCENCE OF PIONEER DAYS
by Henry W. Shoemaker
Whether they deserve their awful fate because the dumbness of “Old Logan,“ their leader, caused the trampoline to death of a pioneer family is difficult to judge, but they paid the penalty, and their executioners were content to rob posterity of these valuable game animals. To this day the barren flat where the McClellan’s cabin stood is known as “The Buffaloes Field,“ and on winter nights it is averred that the tramp of hoofs is herd incessantly pounding the hard earth in a ghostly stampede.
If you want to know the whole story, you can read it, in it's entirety at:
http://www.allaboutbison.com/Bison_History_1911.html (2nd story down) "Old Logan" Winter of 1800-1801

Organic Matters
'No field was ever plowed by turning it over in your mind'...and yet that is what I would recommend as a land management goal. You see, tillage is a destructive practice that oxidizes away your organic matter. Why care? Without it you have a lifeless mineral matrix whose sole purpose is to prop up crops with an endless need for capital and labor intensive inputs of water, fertilizer and biocides. For my money, I'm going to do all I can to amplify the positive effects of a living soil food web. That means mimicking a natural ecosystem which includes cycling the plant residues through animals onto the soil, minimizing soil inversion/disturbance, biological nitrogen fixation and increased biodiversity. The roots of plants exude sugars into the soil to provide energy for beneficial microrganisms which is nature's process for building soil. The useful ecosystem services you receive from partnering with nature include increased water holding capacity and infiltration, increased fertility and nutrient density as well as additional disease resistance with less labor, machinery or costly overhead. 'Work smarter, not harder.'

.Southern Plains Pointers:
October 2014
Going in to November is all about planning and making the best decisions possible during the seasonal shift to winter operations. Once again, as with all other seasons, it’s all about feed. Personally I like to enhance the already bountiful cool season in the southern plains, by adding seed to my system to feed bison and benefit my ecology. That’s right, my ecology. My ranch is an ecology that I accept responsibility for with regard to the whole system and its functionality. Personally; I wish Aldo Leopold were around today and could see, perceive and write about the ‘bison rancher’. He famously, and with elegance, referred to the axe, cow and the plow as being the tools used to destroy the natural environment, but equally available to repair and restore it. I think if he were alive today, he would right about the hydro axe, the no-till and the bison.
The definition of ecology is: ‘the study of the relationships between living organisms and their interactions with their natural or developed environment’. Arguably this is the charge and toil of any land-steward. It’s just more fun as a bison-rancher, predisposed to an appreciation for wild things and their habitat. There’s another ecology also arguably the charge of any and all land and bison stewards; the human ecology. Believe it or not, it’s an actual term defined as: ‘a branch of sociology that studies the relationships between human beings and their natural and social environments’. Boy is that a mouth full these days. The human-ecology is always evolving, always present and always never perfect. It can be as chaotic as the natural world, and equally destructive, beautiful or an efficacious amalgam of both. Personally, I like active participation because my bison deserve my watchful eye on the ‘human ecology’!
One such ecology of the anthropocentric persuasion is the NBLA [National Bison Legacy Act]. S.2464 and HR 3400, which is the reason today, November 1st, is National Bison Day. It is a well rounded and well worded bill that proposes naming bison as the National Mammal of the United States. Personally I am in support of the bill because of the conversations it will cause, and the fact that all communities are identified as integral, including the consumer. In a piece called ‘Bald Eagles & Bison’ I wrote: The bison is already our national mammal and everybody knows it. I know it because it just so happens that; I- read – the – bill… Through the time-of-territories, conception and laborious birth of America, bison have roamed around, through, up against and finally with civilization to become the ecologically dynamic doable. They now stoically remain as remnants, guarded by those who believe and regard their significance with passion and dedication as emblematic to an American metaphor of resilience and strength. Bison are intrinsically American because they are still here, still strong, and though they wear scars of the past, persist with regard as a species of significance. American – you… bet!’ The bills chances of success are slim because of house rule VII, which disallows consideration of any commemorative legislation. This rule can be, and has been suspended at the discretion of the house leadership.
So – get out and participate & Happy ‘National Bison Day’!

If passed, people or organizations that want to bring bison into Valley County will have to file an acceptable conservation plan to the Valley County Conservation District. .. National Bison Assocication
Celebrate National Bison Day Tomorrow!
For the second year in a row, the first Saturday of November in the US will be dedicated to the celebration of the American Bison! This is a great opportunity to celebrate and promote the bison, its heritage and its future.
The NBA thanks all who have supported this effort, including our own delegation of bison producers who lobbied in Washington for National Bison Day just last month. In fact, the resolution was passed by Congress on the same day that we lobbied for it on Capitol Hill that morning.
The Vote Bison Coalition, comprised of the Inter-Tribal Buffalo Council, National Bison Association, Wildlife Conservation Society, and more than 50 other organizations, businesses and tribes, supports National Bison Day as a way to celebrate the bison as an American icon for its contributions to our country's history, culture, ecology and economy.
On November 1, bison supporters across the country will host events celebrating bison in their communities. See a full list of events here: http://votebison.org/events.
Said Dave Carter, Executive Director of the National Bison Association, "The American prairie, which long sustained the American bison, continues to be shaped by this magnificent animal as farmers and ranchers restore the bison to its native landscape in a sustainable and humane manner."
Jim Stone, Executive Director of the Inter-Tribal Buffalo Council, said: "National Bison Day provides the opportunity for the bison communities to educate people about the role this iconic species is playing in the lives of people in today's world. The stories surrounding the bison cover the width and breadth of this country and are compelling and need to be heard."
Keith Aune, WCS Senior Conservationist and Bison Program Coordinator, said: "Establishing National Bison Day is a great way to acknowledge the important relationship of bison to humans and honor the role of this animal to our country's history. The American bison is truly an important animal connecting to humans through economies, ecosystems, cultures and societies. With the passage of this Senate resolution to establish National Bison Day, we can properly celebrate the significance of this force of nature that shaped our American Great Plains over tens of thousands of years.
