The Kalispell Bee – LOC
Kalispell, Montana, December 18, 1901

Last Stand of the Buffalo

Upon the rolling sun-browned plains of eastern Montana was made the last stand of the buffalo. Hunted for centuries by the primitive red man with bow and arrow, yet their numbers had increased until the plain were covered with countless thousands of the shaggy monsters. But with the advent of the white man and the repeating rifle, their days were numbered and now the Kalispell resident or visitor who looks to the north of the city on almost any pleasant afternoon will see grazing upon the gently sloping hills surrounded by a substantial fence the last remnant of the once monarch of the plains.

Excepting the few to be found in the Yellowstone National Park. Flathead county contains the only herds of American bison or buffalo in the world, and strange to say the buffalo is not a native of the Flathead Valley.

In 1882 a few The buffalo were driven into Missoula country from east of the Rocky mountains and coming into the possession of Charles Allard on the Flathead Indian reservation their numbers have increased to several hundred head. From this herd, the 35 head now kept near Kalispell were purchased by Mr. C. E. Conrad.

Canton man cited for jumping into bison pen at Buffalo Rock
A Canton man was cited Saturday for jumping a fence into the bison pen at Buffalo Rock State Park near Ottawa. At about 4 p.m., a state park employee spotted Douglas Lounsberry, 28, and called police. Lounsberry hopped the fence and entered a vehicle driven by his father, James Poppenhager, 47, of Kewanee. The employee relayed to police a description of the vehicle, the license plate number and the direction of travel, and Conservation Police Sgt. Phil Wire stopped the vehicle shortly after the two left the park.

Lounsberry was cited for entering a restricted area and obstructing ID after he provided police a false name and was taken to the La Salle County Jail on a warrant. Poppenhager was arrested for DUI, expired registration and failure to signal. Illinois State Police also responded.

Wire said Lounsberry was trying to pet one of the two bison at the park, which he stressed is dangerous.

Advocacy Group Takes Plant-Based Meat Fight To Super Bowl In Ad
(From Reuters)

An advocacy group backed by the food and restaurant industries took the heated plant-based meat fight to the Super Bowl on Sunday in an advertisement, as consumer hunger for red meat alternatives rages on.
The advertisement, which ran only in the Washington DC market, was aimed at plant-based meat producers such as Impossible Foods Inc, maker of the plant-based Impossible Burger, and Beyond Meat Inc, by the Center for Consumer Freedom.
The Center for Consumer Freedom bills itself on its website as “a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting personal responsibility and protecting consumer choices.”
The ad features a young girl in a spelling bee, who is asked to spell “methylcellulose.” When she asks for a definition, the judge says it is a chemical laxative that is also used in synthetic meat.
An Impossible Foods spokeswoman called the ad “disingenuous, misleading and shameless disinformation.”
The global meat substitutes market generated revenue of $4.2 billion in 2018, and is expected to be worth $6.1 billion by 2023, as more consumers convert to veganism or cut down on consumption of red meat, according to a report by Research on Global Markets.
