Southern Plains Pointers: Oct 2015
Conception Rates, Culling Decisions & The #1 Factor
This is the time of year when we all prepare to work our bison and make decisions about our herd based on what they are doing for us, or represent to the sustainability of our economic model. I tend to look at a bison-work, as a survey of facilitation or husbandry that the bison participate in. We collect data such as; body weight, body score, weaning weight [whether we wean or not], yearling weights, conception rate, dentition, and humane handling efficiency. While data-sets and surveys, like many analogous ‘whatever’s’, only work if you use them, it is also true that the analysis is subject to our perception.
As owner-operators we are in charge of having a plan and the answers. The plan should also include the charge of the answers, or results, containing questions and not fearing the ‘why’ of it. This means: checking attitudes at the door and identifying failures as positives and a chance to improve production, rather than a bad grade. One such scenario may well be conception rates in the southern plains this year. We’ve had back to back [to back] perfect storms for internal parasite explosions and low nutritional regimes. Too much water – no water – and back to too much water. To example the scenario, we will use a bison work, at the end of October, with a conception rate considered low at below 85%.
Answer: 79% conception rate on October 29th. Question 1] why are they open? Q-2] did my worming program work? Q-3] is my mineral program supportive of their reproductive function - and why? Q-4] Is there a correlation between my opens and their body score? Q-5] are they still breeding? Q-6] when did my green-feed cycles occur? Q-7] what was my nutritional regime during the breeding season, and how do I know? Q-8] what age are the opens, and how is their dentition [teeth]? Q-9] can I replace her more cost-effectively than keeping her? Q-10] was my bull to cow ratio adequate? These are 10 questions, for one answer, that preclude with the exception of question 8, the cow being the problem.
The southern plains ecology is different than other regions, and many locations within regions can be unique. We have multiple growing seasons, and our timing for the habitats catalyzing estrus may be out of sync with other places where the buffalo roam. Our cool season is our strong-suit, which can result in off-season breeding and calving. Personally; I consider a late-bred, or off-season bred cow - half full, as opposed to half empty.
If you have a conception rate below 90 - 100%, there are many factors that apply and if you are a bison rancher, your criteria for culling is complicated by the fact that you are conserving a species. Culling is a decision that sometimes has to be made, and should be made, for the health of the herd, the operation and the land. Personally; I assume that if I have a cow that is less than 20/ish years old and she misses for me…
I’ve missed something for her… The # 1 Factor…

For the love of Texas Bison and Texas Wine
by Dan Humphries ~ Bull Dancer Bison Ranch
As a bison rancher that sells grass fed bison meat and also products in the wine industry I just want to share the excitement in the Texas Wine industry about the paring of Texas Bison Meat and Texas
Wines. I have worked with many Texas Wineries in supplying bison meat with wine parings for special events. I now am excited to share with Bison Ranchers some of the Texas Wines recommended with your favorite Bison Meat recipes.
Wine paring recommendations for the Bison
Tenderloin Roast recipe below from the National Bison Association Food insert from the July 2016 Bison World magazine is from the Kiepersol Winery in Tyler, TX.
Marnelle Durrett, Proprietor & Wine Maker says their 2009 Merlot will pair beautifully with this recipe and is readily available across Texas or from their website. http://kiepersol.com. This wine has won many awards including Double Gold in an International Wine Competition!

Tenderloin Roast Steak
Ingredients: 4-pound bison tenderloin, silver skin trimmed and trim ends if they tapper to make the diameter more even. 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 tablespoon salt 1/2 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped or crushed 1 tablespoon each fresh rosemary & thyme leaves, finely chopped Butcher’s twine, as needed
Directions: • Heat the oven to 400°F rack middle. • Heat a large cast iron skillet over high heat with 2 tablespoons olive oil until just starting to smoke. Place the bison in the pan and sear, turning occasionally, until golden brown all over. Transfer to a 13” by 9” baking dish and set aside. • Make the butter spread by mixing butter, garlic, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper in a medium bowl and smash with a rubber spatula until evenly combined. Using your hands, rub the butter mixture over the tenderloin and place in a roasting pan with a rack. • Roast until the thickest part of the bison is 120°F to 125°F for rare or 125°F to 135°F for medium rare, 25 to 35 minutes. • Transfer the bison to a cutting board. Tent it loosely with foil. Let it rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing to serve.

My name is Steve Tolmie, along with my wife Kylie we own and operate Sandy Valley Bison in Dubbo, New South Wales.
I am the president of the ABAA, ( American Bison Association of Australia ) and would like to give you a little insight to our world of bison in Australia.
We had our AGM this year at Aranyani Bison Adventure Tourist Park, Myrtle Creek New South Wales Australia.owned and operated by Damen and Shannon Wells.
This year we had the pleasure of the origin of the Bison industry in Australia, Ashley Brown from Betoomba Bison and his lovely wife Deane as guest speakers.
Without Ashley and Deanne there would be no bison industry in Australia, they were the first to import bison commercially into Australia and have been a main source of breeding stock.
Although still small our numbers are growing each year and we have a bright future with bison.

National Bison Association
NBA Files Comments Opposing COSEWIC Bison Recommendations
The National Bison Association this week filed formal comments with the Canadian Wildlife Service opposing the potential designation of wild plains bison as "Threatened," and wood bison as "A species at Risk."
The NBA comments were filed after the Canadian Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) recommended the Canadian government make those designations under that nation's Species at Risk Act. The Canadian Bison Association has already filed formal comments opposing the COSEWIC recommendation.
COSEWIC is a formal panel that advises the Minister of Environment and the Canadian Endangered Species Conservation Council on potential and emerging threats to wildlife species. Once each year, COSEWIC delivers its' recommendation to the Minister of Environment.
This year, COSEWIC recommended that wild plains bills be listed as Threatened, and wood bison as a species at risk.
NBA Board Votes to Develop Humane Labeling Program
The National Bison Association Board of Directors this week voted to develop a new labeling program that will reflect the commitment that bison producers have in raising and processing bison in a humane manner that respects the animal's natural behavior.
Over the past few years, a variety of outside organizations have developed protocols for audit-based programs that allow companies to label products as humanely raised. However, bison producers have grown increasingly frustrated that the protocols do not reflect the unique characteristics of bison, and that the costs associated with compliance will be unworkable.
In this week's action, the NBA board authorized the association to begin developing a Quality Systems Manual that will be eligible to be approved under the US. Department of Agriculture's Process Verified Program (PVP). The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Process Verified Program allows organizations and companies to develop audit-based systems to verify a variety of label claims.
Dave Carter, NBA executive director, noted, "Our customers are increasingly seeking assurance that our products are produced from animals that are responsibly raised and processed. Our board's action directs us to develop a producer-driven program what will provide that assurance."
