1870
Many Indians and whites considered buffalo tongues to be a great delicacy;western soldiers craved them. In 1870, General John Pope, new commander of the Department of the Missouri, wrote to his old West Point chum, Lieutenant Colonel Richard I. Dodge, in command at Fort Dodge, requesting twelve dozen buffalo tongues. Dodge quickly obliged by detailing a sergeant and a squad of marksmen to scour the Kansas plains for the shaggy beasts. In three days they returned with a wagon filled with more tongues than were ordered. To kill over 144 buffalo, animals that could weigh over 2000 pounds each, solely for their tongues, which weighed an average of two pounds apiece, was perfectly justifiable to those frontier soldiers who believed the herds were expendable.

Southern Plains Pointers: July 2015
Out where the buffalo roam, the mating season is marked by behaviors and sounds of territorial declaration. In my travels across the southern plains – breeding season normally begins now, and is evidenced by deep loud vocalizations, as well as a change in the attitude of otherwise un-aggressive bulls. All the sudden, the bull that acted like your ‘buddy’ for a cube, is looking at you differently while he multitasks reacting to the politics of the herd that includes uncooperative cows and competition for them as mates. In multi-sire herds, each and every bull is up against the same circumstance and as a result, they are very agitated. Weight loss and smart-bumps, especially on the young-guns, are normal to observe as they struggle for the right to reproduce. Personally, it’s my favorite time of year to witness with respect, and caution, as they do their thing. It’s also the time to give them their space, and the benefit of my absence as much as possible.
I like to mechanize the feeding of my bison as much as possible so that it is safe to feed throughout the breeding season. Extra nutrition through the breeding season can upgrade your calf crop significantly. Down south, we find ways to worm in the summer without putting them in the chute which also enhances the bloom and reproductive function of the cow-base. Some cows may look stronger than others and every herd has a weaker end, hopefully not caused by our management. The real value of the weaker-end cows is being tipped off to what the strong cows are dealing with as well, but just dealing with more successfully.
Breeding season is a good time of year to ‘ask not!’ what your bison can do for you, but ‘what you can do for your bison’. Pasture rotation, protein supplementation, mineral supplementation, worming and bull options, is the combination that will produce big calf crops. In nature; they would reproduce at a high level when the environment had a good year. In bison husbandry; we’re always thankful for what nature provides, but make up for what it doesn’t since our environment, and theirs, includes economic sustainability. Another way to look at it is; most people that I help want to have a healthy bison herd. If the bison are in good health, they reproduce; thus – big calf crops = healthy bison herds…

California Drought Pits Salmon Runs Against Nut Orchards - Newsweek
We Americans decided to wipe out the great bison herds on the plains, mostly to starve the Native Americans, but also because bison weren't cows. Cows lend themselves to being someone's private property; bison don't. Cows mind fences; bison don't. Cows can be easily controlled, herded, fed and slaughtered. Bison, not so much. Nor salmon.

One of the latest bison attacks at Yellowstone National Park show that even those who are wary of wildlife can still be hurt by it.The incident happened when a 19-year-old woman was returning to her car after a late-night swim and came up on a bison lying down about 10 feet from her. The bison charged and tossed her into the air before she had time to react, resulting in minor injuries. This was not someone who was tossed or gored after intentionally approaching a bison, as others at the park have done. Her only offense was failing to see the animal after dark, and she could have been severely injured or killed because of it.It’s common for people to assume that those injured by wildlife must have brought it on themselves. But it’s dangerous for people in the parks to think they won’t get hurt as long as they refrain from reckless behavior.Yellowstone National Park was established to preserve and protect a natural area that can be unsafe for humans. And its visitors need to understand that they don’t have to go looking for danger to find it.

Branding No Longer Required For Shipping Bison Between US & Canada
Effective April 8, 2015, Canadian bison exported to the USA for breeding or feeding do not have to be permanently identified with a permanent "CAN" mark as long as they are identified with a secondary dangle tag. The dangle tag must bear the same official ID number as on the approved RFID tag. Like the RFID tags, the dangle tags can only be purchased from the Canadian Bison Association. A transitional period will take place until May 8, 2015 to accommodate health certificates that were issued prior to the effective date of this requirement. During the transitional period, only the approved RFID tag is required for bison.
