Southern Plains Pointers: July

It ain’t very cold out there!  Actually going into August sucks no matter where you call home in North America. Things like nutritional regimes, ambient temperature and behaviors are changing. Bison in the south are more equipped for the southern plains heat than you think.  The latter is a true statement with the caveat that; If_ they are prepared for harsh environmental conditions with adequate nutrition and energy reserve. It takes energy to operate normal bodily functions, juvenile growth and it takes energy to stay cool. The energy reserve is absent when the bison look thin [or hollow] and depression behaviors will follow. Bison with good reserve will endure, but look like you feel when the heat index is kicking your butt too. The big point is survivability. Given the chance, bison are boot-tuff, but can become [wine-glass weak] when there is no reserve present.
Personally, I look for adequate reserve throughout the front end. When that begins to wane, I react. I also keep tabs on my subordinate herd members because they alert me early, to what the leads and bulk of the herd are dealing with.
One trick that has served me well, is whenever things get really tuff, I focus on rotation to pastures that allow the performance of natural response or survival behaviors. This can be a money maker when late calves come into the picture. If you are uncertain of which pasture lends itself to survival behaviors, open all the gates and let the bison tell you. Soon you will know where they want to be, and why.  They are_ that smart, and all you have to do is listen. Personally I contend that they were made for this place, evolved with this place, and as stewards; all we have to do is let them avail [us] of a [sense of place] to their benefit.
There are many things I love about raising bison in the southern plains.
July & August - ain’t one of them!

Summer Reservations

This seems like the coolest summer ever! With August upon us, I'm still cautiously optimistic that it won't be the typical heat wave. Seven inches of rain last week was heaven-sent. If you're also experiencing greener pastures at this time, be mindful to avoid overgrazing. Forage plants need recovery time between grazing cycles to allow the energy gathered from photosynthesis to rebuild the root system. This can vary with species and climate or soil conditions. Plants weakened by drought or other stresses can put out a lot of new growth in these unseasonably spring-like conditions with a still fragile root system and actually suffer a sudden catastrophic collapse with excessive grazing pressure. I would recommend management intensive, rotational paddock-shift cell grazing as opposed to continuous grazing. Cross-fencing for more grazing control is a very wise and productive practice. This can also be accomplished by planting living hedgerows which are actually more cost effective than traditional fence construction.
It is a good time to chisel plow or aerate the ground if you have soil compaction issues (most places do). This helps rain to soak in and roots to sink more deeply plus improves nutrient uptake by the plants. All of these equate to more forage which is money in your pocket. Take care of the land and it will take care of you.
It's also time to start planning to plant cool season food plots.

Keep up the good work and give me a call if I can be of service!

The escapees were in a confinement area south of the Missouri River, but with the drought factor in North Central Montana this year, natural forage is in short supply as is the water in some of the local reservoirs, and the herd went looking for food and water.

Bison Association Director Appointed to USDA Trade Advisory Committee
(NBA Press Release)
The appointment of the National Bison Association Executive Director Dave Carter to a U.S. Department of Agriculture trade advisory panel reflects the growing role of the bison business as a part of the overall agricultural economy, according to the association's president, Bruce Anderson of South Dakota.

"Even though the bison business is a small part of the livestock industry, we need to be a part of any agreement that opens new markets to American agricultural products," Anderson said. "We are pleased that Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is including our voice at the table in this advisory panel."

Carter was one of three individuals appointed by Vilsack last week to the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade (ATAC) in Animals and Animal Products. The other individuals include Shelly McKee of the USA Poultry and Export Federation and Stephen Sothmann of the U.S. Hides, Skins and Leather Association. Vilsack appointed 16 other individuals to other trade panels that will advise the USDA and the U.S. Trade Representative in ongoing trade negotiations.

In making the appointments, Vilsack said, "The agricultural trade advisory committees provide great insight into trade issues for the United States. Hearing from such a wide variety of agricultural experts helps us formulate our trade strategy and keep American exports growing to record numbers. Agricultural trade plays a vital role in the health of our economy, and the new members of the committees will bring welcome new perspectives."

Carter said that the inclusion of the bison industry on the advisory panel comes at a key time for producers and marketers because the ongoing free trade discussions with the European Union and the potential talks with Asian trading partners will all have an economic impact on the bison business.

"Secretary Vilsack and Trade Representative (Michael) Froman have both pledged to work to eliminate the tariff that is hampering the growth of bison meat exports to Europe. Including us on the ATAC demonstrates a commitment to that pledge," Carter said. "In addition, we hope that negotiators will work to reopen markets in Japan and South Korea for our bison exports."

Washington Roundup  Set for September 10-12

Bison ranchers and marketers will be heading to Washington, D.C. September 10-12, to tackle public policy issues ranging from designating bison as the national mammal, to maximizing producer input on the implementation of the interior Department's Bison Management Plan.

"There is no shortage of issues being debated in Washington, D.C. that will directly impact our business," said Dave Carter, National Bison Association Executive Director. "Trade negotiators are in the midst of important talks with the European Union, several USDA departments are involved in initiating the Bison 2014 Study, and the Department of Interior is implementing a new bison management plan. On the Hill, the House and Senate are both considering bills to establish bison as the national mammal. Our presence, and our voices, are very important at this critical time."

Carter said that the Roundup hotel headquarters is being finalized, and will be announced in next week's Weekly Roundup.

"Right now, though, we just want people to put September 10-12 on their calendar to plan on joining us for the important work in Washington, D.C."
