The Murder of The Buffalo,

Few persons probably know how rapidly the American bison is disappearing from the Western plains. At one time it is said they were to be found everywhere west of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River, but for many years they have been extinct east of the Mississippi River. The war of destruction, however, appears to go on more bravely in proportion as they are driven into narrower and narrower limits, and it is not unlikely that the fate of the European bison, which once abounded in the woolly wilderness of Germany, Northern Gaul and neighboring parts of the continent, but which is now to be found alone and rarely in the forest of Lithuania, will soon be theirs.

“To shoot a Buffalo’ seems of mania. Men come from London-Cockney’s, fops and nobles-and from all parts of the Republic to enjoy what they call sport. Sport! When no danger is incurred and no skill required. I see no more sport in shooting a Buffalo than in shooting and the ox nor so much danger as there is in hunting Texas cattle”

Bull Dancer Bison Ranch

For The Love of Bison

As a high school junior Shelby Bishop reached out to a few bison ranches in Texas.  The Bull Dancer Bison Ranch (BDBR) was the lucky ranch that got to work with her.  She had entered a sculpture she created of the endangered Texas Horned Toad in the Houston Live Stock Show.  Before finding out that her piece was a finalist and premium class winner at HLSR she was planning on doing her next sculpture of a buffalo.

Shelby contacted Dan and Susan Humphries, owners of the BDBR, they invited her and her family out for a visit.  During their visit they all spent time in the pastures with the herd taking pictures of the bison which Shelby said was an amazing experience!

That summer she was selected to attend the Western Art Academy at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. Run by the Houston Rodeo, it is offered to 46 students from the Houston area who received an award for their artwork at the rodeo. At the Western Art Academy, she was given the chance to create a series of western-themed sculptures and oil paints under the direction of professionals in the field. She chose to model her sculpture from the photos she took of Cheyenne at the BDBR ranch. (Please see the attached image for the sculpture) “It has been a blessed and fantastic experience being able to attempt the capturing of the soul of such a majestic animal in a simple bronze statue”, said Shelby.

The BDBR purchased the original art allowing Shelby to have 2 bronze made of her sculpture, one for her and one for the BDBR (see photo of the bronze).  Dan said, “She is a gifted and passionate young artist and we were blessed to be part of her journey with our bison”.  From her beautiful work in oils and sculpting of Western Art keep an eye out for her work before she becomes famous.  Shelby was 17 when creating the Texas Horned Toad and Cheyenne sculptures. She graduated Kemper High School last year and now attends Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.

Southern Plains Pointers: Aug 2015

What’s going on out there?

While I wish there were management boxes that could be checked that result in herd-health and production assurances, it just doesn’t work that way when you’re in charge of habitats and animals. August and September are the months that require of us the ability to keep an eye on ‘what’s going on out there’, where-the-buffalo-roam.

Late summer in the southern plains can vary widely depending on the eco-region or biome that you’re managing. Some habitats have native grasses that are now becoming less selectable and nutritious, while other habitats have improved pastures or exotic grasses that need different management for selectability and harvest efficiency. Personally; I am always observing my habitat and reacting to its behavior. Whereas the bison are produced by the habitat, bison management is all about the habitat. Now is the time to be thinking around the corner to calving-season and how your [their] habitat is impacting the calf-crop.

One management technique that can help with calf-crop percentages, is feeding during the breeding season. Other management techniques include worming prior to breeding season, saving pastures with the best [late-season] grasses and browse and, with the exception of feeding, not interrupting the performance of family-group behaviors. The time of year is also a trigger, but if during the breeding season the nutrition is low, the natural response of bison to that, is to produce less.

If you are late employing or addressing any of these proven bison-management techniques, the good news is that we’re still in the heart of breeding season in the South. You still have time to successfully enhance herd health and production.

Cattle and Bison are Better Than You at Feed Mixing
If you give them the opportunity, your livestock can mix their own diets so that they gain weight well and do it for less money.

After two decades of studying how animals choose what to eat, Fred Provenza and his colleagues at Utah State University had a whole new understanding of palatability and the ability of animals to choose the right foods. Their research showed that animals aren’t born knowing what to eat, but that they learn from their mothers, their herd mates and from personal experience. They also discovered that animals can adjust their diets to meet their individual needs for protein and energy. - See more at: http://onpasture.com/2015/08/24/cattle-and-bison-are-better-than-you-at-feed-mixing/#sthash.QU7efeuM.dpuf

Understanding the Federal Livestock Tax Deferral

The program hasnt changed and only comes into effect when the Federal government recognizes a disaster and lists the qualifying municipality where those producers can use the Livestock Tax Deferral Provision.

It allows you to defer income one year. To offset the deferred income you would purchase replacement breeding stock that will be an expense in that income periode, to balance this out.

Income Tax Act 80.3 (1) In this section,“breeding animals” means deer, elk and other similar grazing ungulates, bovine cattle, bison, goats, sheep and horses that are over 12 months of age and are kept for breeding;"

Bison Rancher in Tennessee Offers Free Hay to Drought Stricken Ranchers

National Bison member Eddie Gaw from Tennessee this week contacted the NBA to let us know that they are having a particularly good year of moisture resulting in excess hay.

Eddie has generously offered to donate the hay to any bison ranchers who are in a drought this year, provided they pay for the transit.

If interested, please contact Eddie directly at gawzer@aol.com.

A big thank you to Eddie for his generosity and willingness to help out his fellow bison ranchers .

Bison Delegation Prepares
For Annual D.C. Policy Roundup

A delegation of 14 National Bison Association members will head to Washington, D.C. September 8-10 for a series of meetings with White House agency leaders and with key members of Congress on a list of issues important to the bison business.

"This annual event helps keep bison issues on the front burner for the people who pass the laws and implement the regulations that impact our business," said Bruce Anderson, president of the National Bison Association. "This is the time when the actual producers get an opportunity to provide direct input.

After participating in a briefing session on September 8th, the group will head out to meet with top officials of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Interior the following day. At Interior, the bison delegation will meet with Michael Bean, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks. Bean oversees the implementation of the Interior Department's Bison Management Plan, which calls for greater collaboration with private producers.

At the USDA, an afternoon meeting is set with Val Dolcini, administrator of the USDA Farm Service Agency. The group will push the FSA chief to address issues that are preventing bison ranchers from receiving aid under the Emergency Livestock Assistance Program.

Other meetings are being scheduled with the Foreign Agricultural Service to discuss issues relating to bison exports, and with Deputy Under Secretary Gary Woodward to discuss marketing and regulatory issues.

On Thursday, the delegation will divide into three teams to fan out across Capitol Hill to push for legislation addressing the Environmental Protection Agency's overstep in its amendments to the Clean Water Act, and to push for passage of legislation to designate bison as the official National mammal of the United States.

In one unique twist to the Policy Roundup this year, NBA's International director Paul Kolesar of Alberta, Canada, and his wife, Cindy, will join the American delegation in Washington, D.C.

NBA Executive Director Dave Carter said, "USDA and members of Congress are accustomed to experiencing a great deal of friction between U.S. and Canadian producers of mainstream commodities. Having Paul and Cindy join us in D.C. will demonstrate that the North American bison business is unified and working to accomplish common goals to increase the herds and the profitability of producers on both sides of the border."

Less than two weeks after the National Bison Association requested that the U.S. Department of Agriculture tighten allowable labeling standards on the use of "buffalo," the agency's Good Safety and Inspection Service has issued a notice requiting formal input on updating the official Food Standards and Labeling Policy Book.

After learning that the FSIS was in the process of updating the Food Standards and Policy Labeling Book, NBA Executive Director Dave Carter contacted the head of the agency with a request to require that any products containing water buffalo be required to list the full name, rather than simply "buffalo"

On Wednesday, FSIS published a formal notice requesting announcing the Agency's intent to revise the Food Standards and Labeling Policy Book. The revised Food Standards and Labeling Policy Book will provide updated information for establishments to use when creating new labels and when modifying existing labels for meat and poultry products. The policy book was last updated in 2005.

"The timing of this Federal Register notice was coincidental to our request, but very timely," said Dave Carter, executive director of the National Bison Association.

"The American public has equated the term 'buffalo' with bison for more than 300 years. Now, there are starting to be products in the human and pet food marketplace that are made with water buffalo, but are simply labeled as 'Buffalo'," he said "It's important that consumers understand clearly that these products are made with water buffalo."

FSIS will accept comments on the new policy book through October 19, 2015. Comments may be submitted by one of the following methods:
