We hope you all enjoyed our Black Friday Blowout street party that took place last Friday 25 November.

We were very fortunate to have fine weather, despite the miserable wet week leading up to Black Friday. We had a fantastic turn out and we're still receiving positive feedback from those who made it along.

We would like to thank our wonderful sponsors, community groups and local retailers and eateries that got behind this event and made it a success.

Most importantly, we acknowledge and thank Chamber Chair Maria Heslop for all of her hard work and dedication in putting this event together!

UPDATE: Impact Hub Waipā
 

Background
From a meeting between passionate professionals and champions for Waipā, an idea was born to create a business incubator in Te Awamutu. The concept was presented by Chamber CEO Shane Walsh to Waipā Council seeking approval to investigate the concept, including a budget to complete a feasibility study. The council were very supportive and agreed conceptually that Te Awamutu would benefit from a business incubator.

Feasibility study
The Chamber engaged Impact Hub Waikato to assist with the execution of the study. They applied a robust and well-designed approach, including community outreach, desktop research and academic review. This allowed for impartial and relevant results to be presented to council for a well-informed decision.

An important part of the study (phase 3) involved community consultation and the co-design workshop that took place in October 2022. About 30 individuals representing different organisations such as NZ Police, Corrections, Te Wananga o Aotearoa, Enrich Plus and Sport Waikato participated in the co-design workshop. 

Findings from the study
Alarming figures showed that youth retention rates in Waipā are low, whereas the number of early school leavers and unemployment rates are high. Youth wellbeing and mental health of the general population is deteriorating, and rangatahi (young people) are largely unsupported by the system.

On a positive note, the study revealed that there was a willingness to support the youth and business in Te Awamutu and surrounding communities. 

Presentation to council
The feasibility study was presented to the Waipā Council Strategic Planning & Policy Committee on Thursday 29 November by Shane Walsh (Chamber CEO), Emma Sinclair and Nanise Ginnen (Impact Hub). The outcome from this meeting will be known in the coming weeks.
