2018 End of Year Appeal
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT !
There is still time to help.

Greetings!

We are in the midst of an exciting chapter of Free Columbia’s biography.  We can make out two signatures of this year’s activity.  We have been exploring new directions in our work and we have been in collaboration.
Workshops, a convergence and five art dispersals…

  • Nathaniel Williams led two series of classes in shoemaking in January and February.
  • Laura Summer taught two summer courses focusing on Rudolf Steiner’s sketches for painters, she wrote a new book on this subject, and has been invited to work with Hannes Weigert and David Anderson to create a symposium on the sketches in NYC in 2019.
  • Creation stories as Archetypal Collaborations- a creative, weeklong, convergence of artists.
  • Five art dispersals, orchestrated by Laura Summer, in OR, CA, LA, and NY.
  • In November the first in a series of low – residency courses in painting will begin with Laura Summer.
Collaborations

  • A Rip Van Winkle puppetry project with local children of migrant farm workers in collaboration with METS.
  • Susannah White, in collaboration with the village, created two children’s programs.
  • Free Columbia, in collaboration with Lightforms - Art + Spirit, hosted Martina Müller, Jason Healy, and Zoltán Döbröntei as part of an artist residency program.
  • Nathaniel Williams and Seth Jordan have collaborated with seven interns in Philmont for  nine weeks in our first social theory and action project. This will culminate in a feasibility study for a local currency that could support local economic resilience and culture.
What is next?  At Free Columbia we have spent the past 10 years exploring new approaches to education in collaboration with the Nature Institute, ThinkOutWord, and artists from near and far.  Now we are preparing for our next stage: the offering of a full time program, to begin in 2020, rooted in aesthetic experience, contemplative practices, and action research. In the immediate future we are looking into turning a mill building into a performing arts space, and we will be continuing to teach short courses for children and adults, running art dispersals, facilitating artist residencies, applying for an independent charter, and raising funds.
We are moved when we reflect on what has been possible given that Free Columbia is organized with no pay walls and is carried by grassroots giving.  This is an ideal, broad foundation of solidarity and it is a source of courage and enthusiasm.

We are in need of your support this winter!  We have under $5,000 in Free Columbia’s bank account as of November.  Any contribution you can make will be immediately put to work!
