Announcing the Chosen Family Law Center!

In early February, the team at Diana Adams Law & Mediation, PLLC were extremely proud (and humbled!) to announce to our friends, families, and social networks that the nonprofit organization our team has been working to build over the last 2 years finally launched!

Chosen Family Law Center, Inc. will support LGBTQ+ families, polyamorous families, and other chosen and underserved families with legal support, public education, and professional training for lawyers, mental health professionals and others to make sure these communities have access to culturally competent services they deserve.

This will be the first legal nonprofit to provide direct support to low-income polyamorous families!

We will also support same-sex couples to get their legal paperwork in order to protect their parenting rights! And provide name change and identity document support to trans and gender-nonconforming clients!

For over 10 years, we've received inquiries at the law firm from those who need these services but cannot afford to pay. We've sometimes done so much pro bono/low bono work that that law firm has struggled financially. Often, we’ve had had to turn some potential clients away without being able to offer a strong legal services referral, because we know of no other legal services provider supporting polyamorous, multi-parent or other queer families and chosen families beyond same-sex couples. We know there's a tremendous need for these services, and it feels like a culmination of years of work and planning that we can announce this nonprofit to meet that need!

We are a registered 501c3 non-profit in both NY and NJ and can accept tax deductible donations only from those who pay taxes in those states, but can accept donations from others anywhere if folks don't need a tax deduction.

Before we can afford to take on this pro bono caseload, we need to fundraise, and we would be grateful if you could send our information around to your networks and to people who might support this challenging but necessary work going forward.

This is cutting-edge work and they need your support to meet the urgent need! https://chosenfamilylawcenter.org/donate

Andy Will Co-Lead the March 12th
NY Association of Collaborative Professionals Public Workshop

Andy Izenson is co-leading a workshop on the evening of March 12 that is open to the public and all professionals who work with divorcing clients:

COLLABORATIVE DIVORCE WITH LGBTQI CLIENTS:
CULTURAL COMPETENCE + LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS
March 12 @ 5:00pm - 8:30pm - NYC

As the family law landscape evolves, collaborative lawyers and conflict professionals in all fields who deal with divorce issues, begin to find themselves serving clients who are otherwise under-served by family and matrimonial courts and services. From polyamorous triads to cisgender parents seeking support with the needs of their transgender child, this workshop will provide cultural competency training and practice tips for working with queer and transgender clients. There will be a particular focus on assisting transgender clients through divorce and separation. Participants will leave the workshop with a basic understanding of the unique needs of a range of queer and transgender clients through divorce. Legal as well as psychological issues will be discussed and practical skills will be taught to help collaborative attorneys, family specialists and financial professionals who may work with this population to serve them competently and with sensitivity. A light dinner will be provided.

Cost:  $75.00 - $100.00

Registration and further information is HERE.

Diana Will Host the Second Annual
EU FLI Meeting in Frankfurt this April!

Diana is the Director of the Euro LGBT Family Law Institute, an international branch of the US LGBT Family Law Institute (FLI), a professional community of leading practitioners in LGBT family law, sponsored by the National LGBT Bar Association and National Center for Lesbian Rights, for which Diana and Andy are both proud to be among the New York State representatives. Our own Of Counsel attorney Bill Singer founded FLI and now serves as the International Director.

This year on April 12-14, Diana will hosted the second annual Euro Family Law Institute (FLI) meeting in Frankfurt, Germany. The first Euro LGBT FLI meeting in 2018 was a great success! We brought together leaders in Europe in LGBT family law with some of us from the American branch of FLI. Last year, the attorneys who attended were delighted to have found community with each other. This battle for LGBT+ rights is long and slow and can be quite isolating - we need to stick together and support one another, and we were honored to help maintain the connection between these wonderful attorneys who are leading this movement in Europe.
