Lavender Law 2017!

At the beginning of August, Diana and Andy traveled to San Francisco for the National LGBT Bar Association’s Lavender Law conference and Family Law Institute to bulk up their skills and expertise to support the firm’s clients. The Family Law Institute is an elite, invitation-only symposium of the top LGBT family law practitioners from every state, at which participants skillshare, provide each other support on professional and policy dilemmas, and kvetch about the political climate. Diana and Andy are honored to be two of the representatives from New York State, and Diana is delighted to be the Director of its European branch, coordinating the top LGBT family attorneys in Europe.

In a rapidly changing legal landscape, it’s crucial for us to constantly keep learning and increasing our capacities to protect our clients and their families, and Lavender Law and the Family Law Institute are a large part of that every year.

Lavender Law this year also included the Awards Ceremony for the Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40 – Class of 2017! This year, the National LGBT Bar Association selected our Associate Attorney Andy Izenson as one of the recipients of this award! The LGBT Bar established this award to recognize outstanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender legal professionals under the age of 40 who have distinguished themselves in their field and demonstrated a profound commitment to LGBT equality.

Andy is excited and honored to represent the firm as a recipient of this award, following in the footsteps of Diana, who won the same award several years ago.

New CLE Requirements
on Diversity, Inclusion, and Elimination of Bias

Attention attorneys: As of the beginning of 2018, New York is adding a new category of required Continuing Legal Education credits called “Diversity, Inclusion, and Elimination of Bias,” which can be fulfilled by programs addressing racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and other forms of oppression.

Diana and Andy have extensive experience teaching this kind of class, and are excited and available to teach CLEs that fit these requirements, such as cultural competency trainings for attorneys who serve LGBTQ clients or clients in non-traditional family formations, or Title IX and employment non-discrimination seminars.

You can see the full text of the new requirement here:
http://www.nycourts.gov/attorneys/cle/Eff-010118-NewCategoryCLE-Credit.pdf

You may view the revised section of the CLE Program Rules (22 NYCRR 1500.22(a)) setting forth the change to the biennial CLE requirement for experienced attorneys here:

In addition to being available to teach CLEs to our legal community, Diana and Andy are thought leaders on LGBTQ issues and popular keynote speakers for universities, organizations, institution, corporations, and social groups. Andy and Diana both enjoy giving presentations and teaching classes about LGBTQ family law, non-traditional family issues, conflict de-escalation and consent, sexual assault prevention, Title IX issues, and LGBTQ cultural competency. Contact us if you’d like Diana or Andy to speak to your organization.

Transgender Competency Training at Island Spa & Sauna

In July, Andy visited Island Spa and Sauna, a traditional Jjimjilbang, or Korean-style public bathhouse, in Edison, New Jersey. Island Spa and Sauna reached out to us for help in creating a policy and staff training regimen that would reconcile the traditional single-gender policies for the bathing areas of the Korean Spa with a desire to be welcoming towards transgender and gender non-conforming guests.

Over the course of a few months, Andy worked with the manager of the spa to create a policy and FAQ for guests, and a policy and FAQ for employees, to help them treat both transgender and gender nonconforming guests, as well as cisgender guests, with respect and professionalism.

We are excited to do this kind of training for spas, gyms, and other facilities that have single-gender facilities and want to make them welcoming and comfortable spaces for transgender and gender nonconforming guests and clients. Island Spa and Sauna is doing exciting and cutting-edge work against the political movement that seeks to erase transgender people from public life, and we are overjoyed to celebrate that work.
