Dear Uncommon New York City Families,

Happy New Year! We hope the Winter Break offered your family a chance to rest and recharge. The start of 2021 continues to be a challenging time for our nation and reminds us once again about the work that needs to be done to create a better world and better future for our children. We hope that you have been able to take solace in our Uncommon community – be it connecting with other families virtually, catching up with your teachers and school leaders, or having your student share their excitement about the book they are reading or a science project that is in the works. We remain incredibly grateful for the joy of our students, the dedication of our teachers and your partnership as we continue to navigate remote and hybrid learning. Our hope is that 2021 brings peace and a renewed sense of optimism as we continue to work together as an Uncommon community.

School Updates

Hybrid Launch Update:

As has been true since last March, we are leading our schools in a very dynamic environment, and over the past week, there have been a number of new developments to ensure that we continue to keep our school communities safe. We are excited to launch hybrid instruction this month. Your school leaders will communicate more logistics and next steps with you directly. If you have any questions please reach out to your school’s main office.

Uncommon NYC Health Pass:

We are so excited to welcome you and your children back to school this month! As always, our first priority is the health and safety of our students, families and staff. While we excitedly await to open our doors in January, we are reaching out with an update to our daily school systems to keep our schools safe and to prevent the spread of COVID-19. For families whose students are participating in hybrid learning, starting the morning of the first day of school for your child, you will receive an email and text with a link to our Uncommon NYC health survey - called "Health Pass". The Health Pass survey will ask whether the student/staff member is experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, traveled out of state, tested positive for COVID-19, or has been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

We all have a part to play in keeping our school communities safe and we believe that using this Health Pass survey will help us ensure that our students, staff, and families remain safe as we return to school. We are asking you to do your part by making sure your children have completed their health screenings before they enter school buildings. Your child must have a completed Health Pass survey to enter the school building each day.

A quick video on how to complete the Health Pass survey can be found at http://bit.ly/healthpassvideo. Additionally, you can click on http://bit.ly/healthpassguide1 for a reference guide to complete the Health Pass Survey. If you have any questions please reach out to your school.

Parent/Guardian Survey is Now Live:

The mid-year Parent/Guardian survey is now live. All parents/guardians should have received an email with a link to the survey on January 4th. If you have not yet responded, there is still time to do so. The survey will remain open through Monday January 18th. If you did not receive the survey and believe you should have, please fill out this brief form and we will work to get a copy to you as soon as possible. And, to those who have already responded, thank you so much for your input! We greatly value hearing from you!

Resources

January is Emotional Wellness Month:

We are continuing Emotional Wellness Month through January at Uncommon! Emotional Wellness is the ability to deal with challenges in life, build positive relationships with others, and encourage the use of healthy coping skills. When we learn the names of feelings and how to express them in appropriate ways we are supporting emotional wellness. By practicing emotional wellness we are reducing our stress, getting quality sleep, using healthy coping skills, and choosing a brighter outlook on life!

Below are a few family friendly resources to practice emotional wellness!
