Dear Roxbury Prep Families,

Earlier this week, leaders, teachers, and scholars at Troy Prep arrived at school ready for their first day of in-person learning. This “first” day of school looked unlike any other before – with social distancing markers and temperature checks alongside the usual back-to-school excitement – and it was an important reminder of who we are across all of our Uncommon cities.
As an Uncommon community we:

  • We focus on the most important work. In today’s world, that means health and safety. We are implementing best-in-class measures in order to make our schools as safe as possible.
  • We are stronger together. Our families and teachers are doing incredible work to make remote instruction possible, but we know that being together in person, interacting (at a safe distance) with our scholars, and getting back into our classrooms is where we thrive and can best support students.
  • We are One Uncommon. Getting to this day would truly not have been possible without the entire Uncommon team – families, students, teachers, leaders, operations, nurses, Home Office team members; every one of you played a crucial role in this work.
  • We stay true to who we are. Uncommon’s mission is to support our scholars to and through college. As always, the teachers and leaders in Troy created the joyful, rigorous, and safe learning environment you and your family have come to expect of us. Despite a global pandemic and all we have weathered these last 6 months, we will always deliver on our promise to our students.

We continue to plan for a safe, hybrid reopening in our other regions and look forward to welcoming students back to campus across our regions in the weeks to come.

School Updates

Reminder: Hybrid Model begins Monday, 11/2 (HS) and 11/4 (MS):

As a reminder, we are planning to return to school in-person in a “hybrid model”, on Monday, November 2nd for high school and Wednesday, November 4th for middle school. We look forward to seeing everyone in-person and we are carefully monitoring the health data in Boston to make sure it’s safe.

Roxbury Prep Middle School Bell Times During Hybrid Learning (lea en español):

Roxbury Prep has heard the feedback from our families who are concerned about students spending long hours wearing masks in our schools. To make sure we are keeping our staff and students safe, we have adjusted our start and end times while we are in hybrid learning. If you have students in high school, the bell times at those campuses during hybrid learning are not affected.

  • Roxbury Prep Middle School Doors Open: 9:15am
  • Roxbury Prep Middle School Tardy Begins: 9:45am
  • Roxbury Prep Middle School Dismissal Time: 4:15pm

Our High School has an anticipated hybrid launch on November 2. We will reach out to High School families with more information in the coming weeks.

Updates to Transportation for 2020-21 (lea en español):

Roxbury Prep is working closely with the transportation department at Boston Public Schools. Please see below for some changes for this school year.

  • Students will receive a yellow school bus if they are a 5th grader living more than 1 mile from school, a 6th grader living more than 1.5 miles from school, or a student who receives door-to-door service.
  • Students will receive different bus routes for each day they come to school.
  • At this time, Boston Public Schools is not issuing any waivers for students in 7th and 8th grade who would like to take the bus instead of receiving an M7.
  • To increase student health and safety on school buses, BPS is taking the following precautions:
    • Students and staff must wear a mask the entire time they are on the bus. Students should put on their mask before they board the bus.
    • Students will ride one student to a bench, except in the cases of students who live in the same household.
    • Buses will be sanitized between morning and afternoon routes and again at night.
    • If you or anyone you know would like to be a bus monitor, please visit www.bostonpublischools.org/transportation.
  • Please remove your student from the BPS waitlist in writing! Email welcomeservices@bostonpublicschools.org and your school’s Office Manager to let them know that your student will be attending Roxbury Prep this year.

For more information about transportation this year, you can contact your school’s office manager or visit www.bostonpublischools.org/transportation.

Wellness Corner: It’s Intellectual Wellness Month at Uncommon!

Every month, Uncommon will be celebrating a wellness theme. The month of October’s theme is Intellectual wellness. Intellectual wellness is when you think about and understand your talents. It includes doing activities that help grow your mind. You can take care of your mind by being creative, trying new things, and learning new things. Intellectual wellness involves having an open mind when you encounter new ideas and continuing to expand your knowledge. It encourages active participation in scholastic, cultural, and community activities.

This month, we encourage you and your family to complete the October Wellness Challenge below to practice and incorporate Intellectual Wellness into your day!
