Independent Investigation Statement
Earlier this year, the chair of the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust’s Risk, Assurance & Audit Committee (RAAC) received a series of allegations by a member of the hapū about the conduct of the Board in its dealings with them.  These included allegations about the Board and/or individual Board members and/or officers and their compliance with appropriate governance practices between December 2017 and December 2020.

The allegations were made under the Board's Fraud and Corrupt Conduct Policy.

As the allegations were made to the chair of the RAAC, and to ensure appropriate independence and objectivity, the chair of the RAAC appointed a corporate governance expert to undertake an independent investigation into the allegations.

After reviewing all the relevant information including Board policies and correspondence and undertaking a series of interviews with relevant individuals, the investigation found each of the allegations to be unproven with no evidence of any wrongdoing.

Based on his work, the independent investigator has made some suggestions to assist the Board to further improve its governance processes. These included improving board induction processes, on-going professional development, and improvements to how the Board deals with conflict resolution. The Board welcomes these suggestions and will set about implementing them as part of its journey of continuous improvement.

We now put this matter behind us and move forward with the crucially important work we do in protecting our whenua resources and taonga and supporting our whānau.
