Eyelevel Reshelving Initiative 6: Labour & Leisure

UPDATE: We're taking ERI 6 on tour to other artist-run centres in the Atlantic region. Stay tuned for details.

Once efficiency is universally accepted as a rule, it becomes an inner compulsion and weighs like a sense of sin, simply because no one can ever be efficient enough, just as no one can ever be virtuous enough. And this new sense of sin only contributes further to the enervation of leisure, for the rich as well as the poor.
Clement Greenburg "The Plight of Culture" (1953) p. 31
What does 'productivity' mean in an art context? In an industrial context, the word refers to increased production with the goal of profit. How do we discuss productivity as artists—and other post-industrial workers? For those who do not work for the sole purpose of profit, whose labour doesn’t result in a product, or whose work might be considered a leisure activity, the distinction between what is labour and what is leisure is blurred.
ERI 6: Labour & Leisure, proposes the production of printed matter and multiples as a way of re-imagining hands-on work as both leisure and labour.
Eyelevel invites contributors to approach their submissions to our biennial printed matter exhibition with considerations of the division—or lack thereof—between labour & leisure.
Submissions are to include the following:
❏ A brief description of the work
❏ Sale price (if applicable, 70% of the sale goes to artist, 30% to Eyelevel Gallery)
❏ Artist bio and statement (1 page max.)
❏ Photos of the work

Deadline is March 14, 2014
