Willard Principal Search
After 39 years in education, and 17 years as the outstanding principal of Willard, Pat Fernandes has informed us that she will retire in June 2017.  Pat is a gifted educator and she has served Willard admirably in meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students for the past 17 years.  She will be greatly missed, and we will work very hard to secure the very best new principal.  Kelly McCausland, Director of Human Resources, will lead the selection process during the next two months.  The vacancy has been posted and the interview committee which will consist of administrators, teachers, and parents will be appointed.  The interview committee will select the finalists, site visits and reference checks will be conducted, and I will interview the finalists to select the new principal by March.

Elementary Progress Reports
The 90th day of school is Jan. 20, and Elementary Progress Reports for the first semester will be distributed to parents by the end of January. The progress report is designed to accurately and objectively reflect student progress in mastering end-of-year grade level standards in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and health.  Effective communication between home and school is one of our major goals, and frequent parent-teacher communication, formal conferences, and these progress reports are intended to assist parents in supporting their children’s growth and progress.

MLK Celebration
The Willard 5th Grade Chorus, under the direction of Music Teacher, Charlyn Bethell, will perform at the MLK Celebration sponsored by the Concord-Carlisle Human Rights Council on Jan. 11, 7pm, at Fenn School.

K5 Spanish
Kristen Herbert, Director of Teaching and Learning, is collaborating with elementary principals and teachers, CMS World Language Dept. chair, and CCHS World Language Dept. Chair to determine the curriculum, pedagogy, schedule, and staff.

CMS World Language
CMS 8th Grade World Language students have thoughtfully designed miniature villages as part of a cultural and language exploration. Students have created scaled replicas of shops and businesses that might be found in their country of study.  Students utilized digital models in Applied Technology classes to establish appropriate scale and structural accuracy.  The creation of these mini villages is the culmination of a multi-layered unit that has included the study of architecture, comparisons between buildings in the U.S. and France/Spain/China, as well as practice asking and giving directions in their respective languages.   In the next weeks, parents will be invited to see these villages and view their student's work.

Cooler Concord Fair, Feb. 4, CCHS
K12 students will be presenting their ideas for reducing energy use during the Cooler Concord Fair, a community event on Feb. 4, designed to empower Concord residents to reduce CO2 emissions with incentives, information, and motivation.  The Fair is sponsored by Concord’s Sustainable Energy Committee (CSEC) in collaboration with the Town, CMLP, and our school district.
