The exhibition „Worlds on Paper“ aims to bring under the roof of our Munich viewing room works and artists from different contexts but related to each other and to the profile of our gallery.

The Triad Nutiu-Jemec-Murtic stands for the Abstract Expressionism behind the Iron Curtain, a main topic of ours, also related to the exhibition of the same title, which was on show in 2017 at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center in East Hampton, NY along with the artists Tadeusz Kantor and Jan Kotik.

As 418GALLERY is also strongly committed to Romanian-born artists of the (neo)avant garde who left the country during and after WWII, we are very glad to confront Sorel Etrog’s (1933-2014) and Hedda Sterne’s (1910-2011) surrealistic tendencies in this exhibition. Etrog lived and worked most of his life in Toronto, Canada.
Hedda Sterne was part of the New York School, the city where she lived following her art education in Paris.

From the same generation as Sorel Etrog, the two Timisoara born artist friends Diet Sayler & Roman Cotosman (1935-2006) also decided to emigrate to Nürnberg, Germany and Philadelphia, USA, respectively. Both minimalists, were part of the famous Kalinderu exhibition in Bucharest from 1968 in the context of de Gaulle’s visit to Romania, together with other members of the later SIGMA group.
Vincentiu Grigorescu (1923-2012) left Romania in the early 70s as well and settled in Italy, where he developed his own expression of Spatialism, exhibiting with his Italian peers.

And last but not least, the gallery supports young artists, mostly from Romania, in this show the focus is on the Romanians Petrica Stefan, Mihail Cosuletu and the Italian, Vienna based Simon Iurino who are very active in working on paper.

We are closing with a recent print of Anish Kapoor from the family collection.

Charcoal, print, collage, water-colour, ink, pencil, printing ink, gouache, highlighter, acrylic, felt pen, pastel, cyanotype, all these various tools expressing ideas on paper enable fantastic encounters between young and old, East and West, mostly gravitating around our Romanian roots, creating an intense artistic dialogue.

Best wishes,
