"Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, 'Don't be afraid; just believe.'"
– Mark 5:36
Jairus was edgy. His daughter was close to death, and Jesus had allowed himself to be stopped by a bleeding woman. Now, it was over as he heard the whispers from his servants that his daughter had died. What he feared most had happened. The big D in the basement is the longstanding fear of humankind. The one event we can be absolutely certain of is the event that is rarely that far from our minds. One of the church year's gifts is its insistence that we look this fear in the face; literally marking the ashes of our mortality on our heads. Yet Jesus' words continue to echo: just believe.
