Devotions this week on the theme of subversive strength as seen through the women of Exodus
But the midwives feared God; they did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but they let the boys live.
Exodus 1:17

Liberation in Exodus begins with two midwives, Shiphrah and Puah. Pharaoh commands them to kill all boys as they are born (girls weren’t a threat). But the midwives kept delivering boys in defiance of Pharaoh. When questioned, they claimed the Hebrew women delivered too fast for them to obey his edict. These women defied death orders. They stood strong in the face of the empire – subverting death by delivering life. (They probably delivered Moses…)
