3 Things You Need to Know Right Now

FEMME to STEM PROGRAM + MAPSCORPS

JOIN US - WEDNESDAY 8/7/17!
Our student Data Scientists are at it again! It’s another summer of research and community mapping for girls participating in our summer Femme 2 STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) program. Through a partnership with MapsCorps, our girls are mentored by college students serving as Field Coordinators from various universities.  These student leaders navigate our high school girls through a summer filled with mapping community resources using electronic devices, developing a research question, collecting and analyzing data and preparing research posters for a culminating research symposium. Students receive a stipend from After School Matters. This summer, their research question examines gender norms, perceptions and messaging that girls and young women of color receive regarding careers in STEAM (STEM + ARTS).  Amy Rule, the wife of Mayor Rahm Emanuel visited our site and spent time with the girls mapping the community! A formal presentation and poster session will be held on Wednesday, August 9th, 9 a.m. -12 p.m. at Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Jackson, Chicago, IL.

T3 - TRANSITION, TRANSFORM, TRANSCEND.

“I graduated in the top 10% of my high school class but now I’m 20 years old and I work at KFC and a Cleeaners.”  This is one of many stories shared with our staff as we engaged young women ages 18-24 on the streets of Englewood and Roseland. Young women ages 18-24 have the highest rates of unintended and unplanned pregnancy in the country and have identified a lack of resources and support after high school as a primary area of need. The goal of our T3 program is to provide opportunities for educational and economic equity for young women implemented through a 10 week training which provides life skills, workforce development, and mentorship. Upon completion, participants are linked to partnering which provide a pathway to postsecondary education, entrepreneurship, developing a trade or successful entry into the workforce.

According to the Social Impact Research Center at Heartland Alliance, Greater Englewood is home to more than 10,000 families, more than two-thirds of which are headed by single mothers. About 40 percent of all families are living below the federal poverty line; 85 percent of young children in Englewood live at or below 185% of the poverty level. The Chicago Foundation for Women established and funded the EWI to increase women’s economic security in the Englewood community. EWI will equip women with the tools, skills and resources to put them on a path to good-paying jobs (earning at least $40,000/year) and long-term economic stability.

EWI is a strategic alliance of eight agencies that will work together to strengthen the economic security of women and their children living in Englewood. As an EWI initiative, D2F will host a special cohort of our T3 program for young women ages 18-124 residing in Englewood.
Your support and dedication to our mission allows us to continue our efforts to successfully transition girls to womanhood by providing education, instruction, and resources.
