Open PHACTS Foundation Newsletter #2

Greetings from the Open PHACTS Foundation!

Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to our second Open PHACTS Foundation newsletter. The Open PHACTS Foundation is the not-for-profit successor organisation established to ensure the sustainability of the Open PHACTS Discovery Platform. We will also act as a hub of relevant research and development, and support the thriving scientific community.

Open PHACTS Website Refresh

We are pleased to announce the first stage of our refresh of the Open PHACTS website. This is part of an ongoing process to make sure that visitors can easily find and access the information and resources they need. In particular, we now have a new sub-section of the site dedicated to meeting researchers’ needs. More updates will follow in the near future, and as always we welcome your feedback.

Open PHACTS Travel Grants

The Open PHACTS Foundation invites young researchers to apply for our travel grants. Researchers who wish to present results obtained using the Open PHACTS Discovery Platform at conferences may apply for a grant to assist with travel, accommodation, attendance fees and other related costs. See our news post for more information, and a link to download our Travel Grant Application Form.

Decommissioning of API version 1.3

This quarter we are planning new releases in Open PHACTS including updates to our current API (version 1.4), new functionality and new data. As part of these plans, we will be decommissioning version 1.3 of the API by the end of March 2015.
If you have any questions about transitioning from API version 1.3 to 1.4, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via our support portal.

Open PHACTS Phenotypic Screening Workshop

On February 16-17, 51 people from pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions attended our workshop in Santiago de Compostela, titled “Understanding the knowledge management needs of phenotypic screening”. The aim of this workshop was to understand current computational approaches to phenotypic screening and target deconvolution, and identify gaps and bottlenecks in existing methodologies.

Over the course of the workshop, attendees collaborated to generate a list of prioritised use cases relevant to the field of phenotypic screening. These will be used to guide further development of the Open PHACTS Discovery Platform. Further information, presentations and photos from the workshop can be found on our website.

Big Data Europe

The Open PHACTS Foundation will be one of twelve partners of the Horizon 2020 Big Data Europe project, representing the Health sector in this initiative to build a knowledge- and innovation-based society to strengthen the competitiveness of Europe’s economy. The Open PHACTS Foundation is the not-for-profit organisation responsible for sustaining the Open PHACTS Discovery Platform, which at the Big Data Europe launch event on February 27 was held up as a key example of the benefits that can be gained when private and public sectors collaborate on big data. For more information about this collaboration please see our announcement.

The output of the first Open PHACTS Researchathon has now been published in PLOS One, highlighting the exciting ways Open PHACTS can be used in conjunction with workflow tools such as KNIME to support drug discovery. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this work and to the development of the Open PHACTS Discovery Platform.

You can find a full list of Open PHACTS publications on our website

The Open PHACTS Foundation

Contributions and support from members of the Open PHACTS Foundation ensure the ongoing operation of the Open PHACTS Discovery Platform, to facilitate research and drug discovery around the world. We are delighted to welcome Lilly as our fourth member, and thank all our members for their ongoing support: If you or your organisation would like to know more about becoming a member, please don’t hesitate to email – we would be happy to talk about how you can contribute to the world’s largest open semantic infrastructure for life science knowledge discovery.

Until next time, many thanks,
