Christmas Holiday Energy Savings!

We are pleased to share with you that King’s reduced our electricity consumption by 43 per cent and gas by 24 per cent compared to normal December usage. The Sustainability Team would like to thank you for all reducing our electricity and gas consumption over the winter break. This resulted in savings of £73,000 and 338 tonnes of CO2. We managed to improve by 24 per cent against the winter break of 2012/13. This is a fantastic achievement but there is still room for improvement.

University-wide efforts are helping us to achieve our energy and carbon reduction targets. Shutting down unnecessary items, including lab equipment, lighting and PCs wherever possible led to this result. This builds on the success of the Blackout project in late 2014. This year we will be aiming to achieve similar savings every holiday, weekend and evening when non-essential equipment, such as lights and computers, are not needed.

Sustainability Champions - We need you!

This term we are officially launching our  new project - Sustainability Champions. We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate staff to volunteer as champions to promote sustainability and change your workplace for the better, helping to reduce the university's carbon footprint. As champion you will help to drive sustainability at grassroots level in your office or lab, by working through criteria in our online workbook. If you would like to learn more please visit our webpages, or contact us directly.

Are you a student and would like to get involved? We are looking for keen students to match up with Sustainability Champions for support. We will also need student volunteers to help audit staff teams at the end of the year. Students will recieve official training accredited by IEMA. Get in touch if you want to be involved.

Green Week

Green Week is an annual week of climate action in institutions across the country. Join us for an action packed week of actives to raise awareness and call for stronger action to promote sustainable living. This year at King's we will be focusing on how individuals and individual actions can make a difference to reducing our environmental footprints.

The Sustainability will be touring around the King's Campuses as well as hosting a special event each day. Watch this space for a full timetable which will be available shortly. We are looking for volunteers to help us throughout the week. If you would like to get involved, please sign-up here, we would love to hear from you!
King's Unplugged (formerly the Blackout)

After the success of the Blackout, and the huge savings over the Christmas break, we will be holding another shutdown of non-essential equipment: King's Unplugged. It will be held during Green Week on Friday 13 February from 18.00 - 20.00 at Denmark Hill Campus.

This is an excellent opportunity to improve your CV by gaining King's accredited training in environmental auditing, and experience in completing a full energy audit at Denmark Hill Campus. Teams will audit Denmark Hill Campus before switching off non-essential equipment to save unnecessary energy waste.

If you would like to take part in King's Unplugged, and gain official experience in environmental auditing, please sign-up here. PLEASE NOTE: you  must be available on the afternoon Wednesday 11 February and the evening of Friday 13 February.

Fair Trade Fortnight

Join us in celebrating 20 years of Fairtrade, supporting better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for marginalised workers and farmers. This year the spotlight will be on the producers who grow core products that we love - cocoa, sugar and tea. Fairtrade fortnight is an opportunity to educate our community why we should choose Fairtrade, and a chance to take action to help King's become an accredited Fairtrade university. During the fortnight there will be promotions throughout our food outlets and bars. Keep in touch to see the full schedule that will be available during Green Week.
