A Fitting way to end the year

Walking out of our Christmas gathering on Saturday evening the 15th, it was very clear to me how much had changed in a year.   A year ago on such an evening we had our first event for Albanians in the Boston area. Kristine and I did most everything. Set up and decorations, greeting and introductions. I emceed, ran the music and the video clip, gave the Christmas message and then stayed late to clean up.  It was the beginning and what we expected. We knew enough people to invite them and some were helpful but we had no team, no plan, and no idea of what would happen.

This year I left by 9pm while the gathering continued.  Still recovering from pneumonia, I was tired and took some Albanians and my kids home.  Kristine stayed to clean up helped by many others. That evening, Geris, one of the believers, gave the intro and welcome, then Filip ran the program with songs, readings and gave the message. Four others, including the pastor and his wife of the local church where we meet, helped Kristine with the kids program.  Many others were busy throughout the night welcoming and helping. It was a great gathering.  There were probably 60-70 adults and children there, some coming for the first time.

The whole evening was a great illustration of a few things.  First, God has moved in very clear ways this year; gathering believers, connecting churches, stirring seekers.  All things way beyond me and done in a way and at a pace to make sure I know that it is not my work. To God be the glory!
Secondly, it continues to encourage me to embrace my limits and give space for God to move in and through others. God shows up in special ways in my weakness, limitations, waiting and prayer.  He has worked in and through these things this year, not through herculean effort, incredible gifting, or wonderful planning.
Thirdly, it illustrates the potential of what is happening here among Albanians. Even as we look to 2019 we pray for conversions, more seekers, and increased strength and unity among believers while also knowing that the evil one can so quickly tear it all down through pride, division, and jealousy.  We move forward with a mix of hopeful expectation and humble sobriety.

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”  Ephesians 3:20-21
