Join us to reflect on the richness and challenge of the selected teaching from the legacy of Thomas Berry,       Spiritual Master of the Ecozoic Age.

These monthly invitations are sent with a selection from Thomas Berry's writings to inform our shared silence and dialogue, and to foster us in The Great Work of cultivating a community of contemplative ecologists as a feature of our ecozoic vocation.

Please invite your friends and spread the word.  We especially ask you to invite a young person to join our circle, as we do our ministry of mentoring the next generation of Earth Caretakers.

Our Contemplative Ecologists Circle has gone global!
It is our hope that others will adopt the Contemplative Ecologists Circle as a format for
expanding engagement with the wisdom writings of Thomas Berry.

Contact us if we may be of assistance: kdeignan@iona.edu

We encourage our Canadian and Latin American Friends to join us if your time zone allows.

To Wantonly Destroy a Living Species
Thomas Berry

The ecological age fosters the deep awareness of the sacred presence within each reality of the universe. There is an awe and reverence due to the stars in the heavens, the sun, and all the heavenly bodies; to the seas and the continents; to all living forms of trees and flowers; to the myriad expressions of life in the sea; to the animals of the forests and the birds of the air. To wantonly destroy a living species is to silence forever a divine voice. Our primary need for the various life forms of the planet is a psychic, rather than a physical need. The ecological age seeks to establish and maintain this subjective identity this authenticity at the heart of every being. If this is so of the prehuman phase of life, it is surely true of the human phase also. “The Ecological Age,” The Dream of the Earth, 46
Prompts for Reflection:

1.  How do these words of Thomas' resonate with you now in this season of pandemic?

2.  How is our present crisis revealing the depths of Thomas' wisdom? or of Pope Francis' wisdom regarding "integral ecology" = the absolute interdependence of all beings for a state of well-being?

3.  How are we being invited by "Angelus Corona" the- Angel Covid 19 - to perceive the collapse of our old world order as a merciful crisis?

4.  What grace does this purifying angel bear in its universal urgency that might empower us to undertake more pressingly the building of an "Ecological Civilization"?
