Philip Thomas Rugo Scott (or Thom Rugo, his alias), a 2015 graduate of the UCLA Department of Design and Media Arts, has always been cautious about consuming and sharing information online, unlike other millennials who frequently do so without considering the implications of their actions.
His senior thesis project, a thought-provoking art piece titled Central Hub, encourages individuals to reevaluate their blasé attitudes about privacy, data security and surveillance. Read the full story here.
The 3rd annual Mobility and Modern Web Conference will take place September 16-18 2015 at UCLA! The program features two days of exciting sessions, followed by a day of hands-on workshops, covering the latest trends of mobile and the modern web.
The University of California Computing Services Conference (UCCSC) 2015 will be held in Riverside, the City of Arts and Innovation. The conference will run from August 16th, opening with a Sunday welcome reception event and closing on Tuesday August 18th.
Proposal submissions are now open! UC Riverside will be accepting proposals April 28th to June 5th. Our theme is “In a Cloud of Our Own”. Proposed focus tracks include “web”, “research & data” “IT service management”, instructional design”, and “cloud computing”. Presenters are not limited to these tracks and we understand a proposal may span multiple tracks.
The Summer Institute will provide a week long education and training program in High Performance and Data Intensive Computing. The program will deploy a flexible format designed to help attendees get the most out of their week.
The first half of the Summer Institute will consist of plenary sessions covering essential skills including data management, running jobs on SDSC resources, reproducibility, database systems, characteristics of big data, and techniques for turning data into knowledge, software version control and making effective use of hardware. This will be followed by a series of parallel sessions that allow attendees to dive deeper into specialized material that is relevant to their research projects and covering topics in SPARK, Parallel Computing, Performance Optimization, Predictive Analytics, Scalable Data Management, Visualization, Workflow Management, GPUs/CUDA and Python for Scientific Computing.
A limited number of room and board scholarships are available. Participants are encouraged to apply early.
INCITE issues an annual call for proposals of high-impact, computationally intensive research campaigns in a broad array of science, engineering, and computer science domains. Individuals and teams of researchers from academia, national laboratories, and industry are eligible to apply, and awards of one, two, or three years are granted. If you answer "yes" to the following questions, INCITE may be right for you:
Is your science campaign outpacing the computing resources available to you?
Do you have a long-term vision for your research campaign, over a period of years rather than months?
Can your workflow and data management strategies allow you to effectively use an INCITE-sized award?
INCITE awards are large-often one hundred times greater than more generally available allocation programs-and a limited number of projects are selected each year. Campaigns chosen by the INCITE program typically cannot be performed anywhere else and require extremely large high-performance computing (HPC) systems, large awards of time, very large memory, or other unique LCF architectural infrastructure to succeed.
INCITE supports research that answers high-impact, key scientific or technical questions or points to new areas of research. Accomplishments by INCITE researchers are frequently seen in Nature, Science, and other highly visible journals.

From a user perspective, supercomputers are more complicated to program and handle than an ordinary desktop workstation. Unfortunately this leads to parallel programs that do not necessarily satisfy the performance expectations of the users. Such unexpected performance results can have many reasons. Basic knowledge on performance modeling, prediction and verification, as taught in this summer school, is needed by users to formulate and verify their performance expectation. This two-day training covers all aspects of visualizing data from a broad variety of domains. The training kicks off with an introduction to visualization followed by best practices when dealing with diverse data (abstract and spatial), demonstrating a variety of methods and techniques on those data sets and demonstrating a range of freely available software. Real world problems for which visualization is needed will be demonstrated and attendees will be taken through the process of visualizing this data and gaining insight.
