Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents:
Congratulations to the eighth graders and their families on their high school acceptances
Congratulations to the Booker T. Raiders (basketball team) on winning the Championship this weekend.

There have been many interesting conversations at school this week around academic honesty. Please continue those conversations with your children.
Progress Reports are now open on Jupiter. You will not have access to them once the window closes so consider printing them. If you have concerns about your child’s progress, please contact the teacher.  The Third Marking Period ends on April 1st.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are on March 17th from 12:30PM-3:00PM and from 5:00PM-8:00PM. More information about signing up for appointments will be out later this week.

Boxtops Reminder

Sign the Petition to Improve Our Playground

If you have a child at Booker T Washington, you’ve seen them. You’ve stepped on them, swept them up and plucked them from socks fresh out of the dryer: tiny black pellets from the field adjacent to MS54 where our kids have recess and play before and after school. Now it’s time to do something about it. The PTA and SLT, in conjunction with MS54’s newly formed Wellness Council, are sponsoring a petition to the City Council for funds to replace this degraded turf with a new, eco-friendly material that is better for our kids and the environment.

But to make it happen we need your support — please click here to sign our petition! The more signatures we gather, the greater our chances of success. A new field will benefit not only our MS54 students but the many neighborhood residents and soccer and baseball leagues who use the field frequently.

Important Meeting for 7th Grade Parents

On Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 6:30 PM we would like to share with you information regarding high school choices and options, the high school application process, and other pertinent information which will help you and your children make the best decisions possible with regard to high school choice.

Achieve NYC Survey

The Department of Education’s Achieve NYC is a family’s complete guide to New York City public schools. This guide is released annually, and provides families with important information about their child’s school and instruction, available supports and services, programs, policies, resources, and more.

Please help improve Achieve NYC by completing this short, confidential survey.

Free Microsoft Software

Parents and guardians of a student enrolled in a NYC public school are now able to download Microsoft software from, at no cost, on up to five of their family’s computers and five of their family’s tablets, smart phones, or other mobile devices.
Free products include:
  • Office 365 ProPlus on Windows: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Skype for Business, Access, InfoPath and Publisher installed on Windows
  • Office for Mac Professional 2016: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote
  • Office for iPad, iPhone, Android: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote
  • Cloud service
  • Office Online
To download, visit and enter either of the following:
1. Student’s date of birth AND a parent phone number, or
2. Parent email
The information that you enter to claim the download must match the information on your Blue Card on file with the school. Therefore, it is necessary that ATS have the most up-to-date parent contact information in order for the verification and download process to be successful. If you have trouble claiming the download, you can visit a school’s main office to make any necessary changes to your contact information.
There is no deadline to claim the free software. Families may download the software as long as they have a child enrolled in a NYC public school.
As Office 365 is a Microsoft Cloud product, parents must create a Microsoft Cloud account in order to download the software. The website contains not only information on how to create an account, download the software, but also answers to “Frequently Asked Questions.” For technical assistance families may contact Microsoft Customer Service at: 1 (800) 642-7676.

Project Cicero Book Drive

The Project Cicero Book Drive will run from Monday, March 7th to Thursday morning, March 10th. This is a great opportunity for a little spring cleaning! Bring your gently used books for drop-off in the boxes that will be placed in the MS 54 Lobby.

Please remember we are only able to accept books during the drive period as Project Cicero's goal is to have the books available by the weekend to teachers from under-sourced schools.

We are collecting new and gently used hardcover/paperback for children through high school students including picture, early reader, reference, math/science, test prep, and fiction/nonfiction.
