Letter from Dr. Elster

Dear Parents,
I want to thank those of you who contributed this week to the Annual Fund. Again, without the support of the parent body, we would not be able to have so many of the resources we do.

To those of you who have not contributed yet, please consider participating. Your children benefit from our support.
Friday, December 18th, will be a full day for students. My request for a half day for professional learning was rejected by the DOE. As you know, the teachers gave up some of their professional learning time in order to maintain Early Academy. My hope was that the teachers would make up some of this professional learning time on select half days during the year. I will continue to push for the January, March and May half days.

This coming week, we will host the first Sixth Grade Recitals of the year. I hope you can join us. The recitals will begin PROMPTLY at 9 AM and will finish at 9:45 AM. A complete schedule is on the website. Progress Reports for the Second Marking Period will open at the end of the week. Details will follow.
Elana Elster

Tutor Fair Planned for January

Many parents are asking about how to find the right tutor for their child. Excellent tutors are available for the SHSAT, the upcoming state tests, organizational skills, extra help in math, science, writing, humanities and even keyboarding and other computer skills.

To help you find the right tutor for your child, the PTA is hosting a Tutor Fair at the January PTA meeting on Tuesday, January 12th at 7pm. We will bring in tutoring organizations from around the city. You will have the opportunity to meet with them to learn about their offerings and costs. You'll also have the ability to compare and contrast these groups in a comfortable setting.

We are excited about this first-time event and we know it will be helpful to many of you. If you would like to help organize the event, or if you have any questions or comments, please email Christine Annechino.

Wellness and Health Committee

The School Leadership Team (SLT) has created a new committee focusing on Wellness and Health. This committee is open to the entire school community: administrators, parents, teachers and staff. The mission of this committee is to work with the SLT to find ways to improve the focus on the physical, mental and social well-being of our students, in addition to improving the focus on health and nutrition.

If you would like to join the committee, please contact:

Red Cross Babysitting Course

The PTA is considering offering a Red Cross course in babysitting, that covers leadership skills; how to develop a babysitting business, keeping themselves and others safe; helping children behave; and learning about basic child care and basic first aid. The cost for families would be $85. If you would be interested, please take this brief survey. We need to make sure we have enough interest to offer the course. The recommended age for this course is 11 to 15 years old.

Digital Game Design Challenge

Middle and high school students in NYC public schools are invited to participate in the Games for Change Student Challenge, a digital game design challenge hosted in collaboration with the NYC Department of Education.
Students can apply their coding skills and passion for games to real-world issues they care about!

Prizes include paid internships, mentorships with game developers, and more. Click here for more information.

Parent Engagement Thursdays

Please see the MS54 Calendar for details on all upcoming speakers.

Yearbook Photos Wanted

The site that we are working with for the creation of our 2016 yearbook allows the community to upload photos. This means YOU, and we would very much appreciate any photo contributions you make, whether of your child or other MS 54 students. Please click here for more information on how to submit yearbook photos.

Safety Patrol

We are asking parents to volunteer a half hour one time during the school year to walk around the neighborhood at dismissal time.

If you are interested in signing up, please email Alix Botwin Krell.

Donate to the Annual Appeal

Please make your contribution today. Every contribution, no matter how big or small will have a positive impact on our children’s education. We are suggesting a contribution of $1,000, but would like to see everyone give what they can. It is important that we receive your Annual Appeal contribution as soon as possible so that we can ensure that all of the PTA projects will be fully funded.
Act now in one of two ways:
1.  Write a check to “MS 54 PTA” and mail it to the school.
2.  Click on the “Donate to the Annual Fund” banner on the top of this email or CLICK HERE NOW.
ANY AMOUNT YOU CAN GIVE MAKES A DIFFERENCE.  Please remember that contributions to the PTA will be kept confidential, are completely voluntary, are tax deductible and meet matching gift programs for most companies.

Fairway Community Partners Program

Use your Community Partners card every time you shop at Fairway and 3% (or more) of your purchase will be donated to MS54. Click here for more information!
