Letter From the Principal

Dear Parents,

I hope your family is safe and well.

I know that many of you have many questions about school and what will next year look like. While I, along with administrators across the city, not so patiently await guidance from Chancellor Carranza, I have been planning and looking at all the potential ways we can continue what we do while keeping your children and the faculty safe. In addition, our planning committee, comprised of parents and members of the faculty has been meeting regularly to discuss the various alternatives and possibilities. While I do not have many of the answers to the questions you have, I do want to share with you what we have been grappling with and discussing.

Please join me on Zoom on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at 7pm for a Summer Town Hall. At that time, I will share with you what I know, what we are thinking, and try to answer your questions.  Your children are invited to join as well.

In the meantime, if you know now, that regardless of Booker T.’s  plans for bringing students into the building, that you will not send your child into school and want 100% remote learning, please fill out the survey below as soon as possible. If you are not sure yet,  you have until August 7th to do so. The sooner we know your plans, the easier it will be for us to solidify ours.

Looking forward to connecting next Thursday evening, July 23.

NYC DOE Learning Preferences for the Fall

This fall, schools will offer a combination of in-person and remote learning. You can choose from two options:

1. 100% Remote Learning: Opt in to have your child learn 100% remotely (all online, from home). To choose this option for your child, fill out and submit the form below. If you are having difficulties completing this form online, call 311.

2. Combination of In-Person and Remote Learning: Your child can follow their school’s schedule, a mix of in-person days at school and remote learning days from home. To choose this option, no action is needed: your school will be in touch about its schedule and programming plans in the coming weeks. Please visit the Return to School 2020 pages on the website for more information.

After August 7, any family who chose 100% Remote Learning will have the option to change back to Blended Learning at a few specific times during the school year.

Summer Engagement Series

We’ve all been isolating for so long it’s hard to remember what it was like to just get together and hang out after a student performance, science fair, or PTA meeting. And we know it’s even harder for those of you who are new to our community. To combat the summer doldrums and (re)connect with all our families, the PTA is working on a series of online community builders for parents, families and kids. If you’ve got an idea for a virtual meetup or would like to host an online event, please reach out to Stay tuned for more information to come soon!
P-EBT Food Benefit Cards

This summer, families of students enrolled at NYC public schools will receive a food benefit card (P-EBT card) in the mail with $420 per student to help cover the cost of meals while school buildings are closed during the pandemic. You do not need to take any action — cards will be sent to the address on file or EBT cards will be credited the amount. If you have questions, please visit the NYS FAQ page or call 1-888-328-6399.

Everyone who receives the P-EBT card should use it, even if you don't need the money. There is no option to transfer your card to someone else or return your card to the government, and using your P-EBT will stimulate the local economy. But, after you have used your P-EBT, you can redistribute the funds by donating the equivalent — $420 — to support food distribution efforts throughout NYC or to another cause that’s important to you — such as MS54.

2020 Census

As we grapple with COVID-19, completing the 2020 Census is even more important now than ever. The number of New Yorkers who are counted will determine how much funding we receive for our schools and public services over the next 10 years. City schools receive more than $781 million every year in Title I funding, based on census data. In addition, the census helps determine funding for early learn centers, in-school and afterschool youth programs, childcare programs, and other services that support our school communities.

You can play an active role in ensuring an accurate count by urging staff and families to complete the census online at, or by calling 844-330-2020, and completing the brief survey, which is open until October 31.
