What You Don't Know About Kids and Media

Did you know that children ages 8 to 18 spend more time with media than they do at school or with their parents?

If you answered "no," you won't want to miss hearing from Michelle Ciulla Lipkin, Executive Director of the National Association for Media Literacy Education, at the next PTA meeting on Thursday, November 5th at 8am. Michelle will discuss the many ways -- both positive and negative -- in which media is impacting our children's lives.

MS54 Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones must be turned off before entering the school. They should be put away at the start of your day so they are neither seen nor heard. In the event that such devices are seen or heard, they will be confiscated. Confiscated devices must be picked up by a parent or guardian. Parents must contact the Dean to make arrangements to pick them up.
Please note that the use of these items is not permitted in the school yard during lunch, in the cafeteria during breakfast, and during Early Academy.

Spring Auction Help Needed

Thanks to everyone who attended the kick-off Auction Meeting. It was nice to see so many new faces.  We are very excited for this year’s event. We have some great new ideas and will be making some BIG changes. However, in order to make this a spectacular party we still need more volunteers. Aside from collecting donations, we need parents to help with the following committees: Baskets; Raffle Sales; Data Entry; Solicitations; Communications; and Food. If you are interested in helping out, please contact the Auction Committee at or come to the next meeting on Thursday, November 12th at 8:45 AM in Room 133.

Safety Patrol -- New This Year

We are asking parents to volunteer a half hour one time during the school year to walk around the neighborhood at dismissal time. If you are interested in signing up, please email Alix Botwin Krell.

Flu Vaccines for Students

Every year, in preparation for the influenza season, the School Based Health Center will offer the influenza vaccine to any child who is registered with the clinic. We will have both the inactivated injectable vaccine as well as the live attenuated nasal vaccine. In 2015, year, the influenza vaccine consent form was distributed to each student's family with the Ryan Center registration packet. If you did not fill out the consent form in the registration packet but would like your child to be vaccinated, you may fill out the same form that is linked here. Please note that we cannot vaccinate your child unless the general Ryan Center consent form has been filled out and signed. If you also need the registration form for your child to receive general services from the Ryan Center, please stop by the school office or the clinic to pick one up.

Influenza consent forms should be returned to your child's teacher or directly to the clinic as soon as possible since vaccinations begin in late September through October. We will only accept hard copies of the consent form, so please do not e-mail the form to the school. Also, please make sure that the influenza vaccine consent form is filled out completely and signed at the bottom if you wish for your child to be vaccinated. No student will be vaccinated without a signed, completed consent form.

Please also review the 2015-2016 influenza Vaccine Information Statements from the CDC linked below for both the injectable and nasal vaccines.

We look forward to a happy and healthy school year!
