This year’s exams are untimed. As long as students are actively working on the exam, they will not have the time pressure they have had in the past. Please be sure your child gets a good night sleep before the exams and eats breakfast. Breakfast will be available for students beginning at 8:00AM on MondayTuesdayThursday and Friday and at 7:45AM on Wednesday.

Report Cards will be distributed on Monday, April 11th. If your child owes library books, please be sure he/she returns them on Monday morning.

Mostly for cost reasons, but for convenience too, we are exploring the purchase of electronic textbooks for other subjects next year. If your child used an electronic textbook in math last year and you have feedback about his/her experience, please email me (

While the MS 54 auction team is working to pull off the best MS 54 event of the year we need you to do these 3 things!

1. Purchase your tickets today and while you're at it, purchase a chance to win two tickets to Hamilton; it's right on the ticket page! Click here

2. WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS!! The auction committee has been working hard to put together a great event, but they can't do it alone. Please consider donating an hour or two of your time to help make the auction a successful event.

We especially need volunteers in the following areas:
  • Selling raffle tickets during the auction
  • Working the live auction to be a bid spotter
  • Entering winning bid information into the computer
  • Helping out with check-out & item distribution
If you are interested in helping out, please click the Volunteer link on MS 54's website or go to

3. Visit the Online Auction and start bidding! These items will not be at the Live Event. You don't want to miss them!

Thank you for doing your part in making the biggest Fundraiser of the year a success!

Have You Had "The Talk" With Your Child?

Whether you've had one talk with your kids about sex, or many, or none, you won't want to miss the PTA's next guest speaker, Dr. Jonathan Weiss, adolescent psychiatrist, who joins us Tuesday, April 19th at 7pm.

Dr. Weiss will speak on the topic of adolescent sexuality, how to speak to your children about it, and its role in adolescent development in general. The talk will also address the risks and benefits of the internet and social media for adolescent sexual development. You won’t want to miss this enlightening talk.

We look forward  to seeing you there. If there are other topics that you would like to have addressed during the talk, please send your suggestions to:

Does Your Old Instrument Need a New Home?

Are you sick of watching that old clarinet collect dust in your apartment? Booker T. wants it!

Recently, a few of you have graciously reached out and offered to donate used instruments to MS 54's music program. These donations have gone a long way toward ensuring that we continue to have thriving wind and string instrument programs here (an increasing rarity among public middle schools in NYC).

The majority of the instruments that we use here at Booker T. are quite old, and while age does not necessarily determine the quality of an instrument, 40 years in the hands of middle-schoolers certainly does, and repair costs are high.

This is why we are asking YOU to donate any instruments that you may be willing to part ways with. We will take any and all musical instrument donations as long as the instruments are in GOOD PLAYING condition. Cosmetic flaws are not an issue.

We are very proud of the fact that we have enough instruments here for everyone to use; we've never had to ask students to rent or purchase their own instrument in order to participate. Your donations will help keep this tradition alive and well! Email Dan Fagen, Band Director, to donate your instrument to MS54.

Wellness Council

The next meeting is on Monday, April 18 at 12:25pm and will continue the conversation around the benefits of physical activity with two guest speakers, to be announced at a later date.

Boxtops Reminder

Please don't forget that MS54 participates in the Boxtops program and that the collection box is in the lobby of the school. We recently submitted Boxtops worth $354. Keep the Boxtops coming! It's free money for our school.

Sign the Petition to Improve Our Playground

If you have a child at Booker T Washington, you’ve seen them. You’ve stepped on them, swept them up and plucked them from socks fresh out of the dryer: tiny black pellets from the field adjacent to MS54 where our kids have recess and play before and after school. Now it’s time to do something about it. The PTA and SLT, in conjunction with MS54’s newly formed Wellness Council, are sponsoring a petition to the City Council for funds to replace this degraded turf with a new, eco-friendly material that is better for our kids and the environment.

But to make it happen we need your support — please click here to sign our petition! The more signatures we gather, the greater our chances of success. A new field will benefit not only our MS54 students but the many neighborhood residents and soccer and baseball leagues who use the field frequently.
