Letter from the Principal


Dear Parents:
 
The Fourth Marking Period Progress Reports are now open and will remain open until the end of the day on Monday. Please remember that these represent a list of assignments and not the overall grade.
 
Booker T. Day is on Thursday, May 26th. Booker T. Day is a day designed to get students out of the classroom and into the city. It is a combination of explore the city/career day/ do something unique day. I am grateful to all the parents who volunteered to host groups of students and for the many parents who have volunteered to chaperone. We are still looking for a few more chaperones. If you can help, please email me at eelster@schools.nyc.gov. Eighth graders have the privilege of signing up for their choice of activities first. Sign up for eighth graders begins Sunday evening. Sixth and seventh graders can begin signing up on Monday evening. All students must sign up by Tuesday evening. Information about how to sign up went out via Jupiter as did the list of activities. Students will also receive a permission slip in school on Monday. Every student must have that signed to participate. I am grateful for the PTA’s willingness to help underwrite some of the cost of the day. 
 
For the past month, I have been meeting with a committee of students to discuss revising the Dress Code. It has been interesting for me to hear their thoughts about the current one and to work with them to revise it. Tomorrow the students will present the revised Dress Code to the students.  They will bring home a copy of it on Tuesday. The crux of the Dress Code involves the students having to decide what would be appropriate for school – for their work setting and avoiding those clothes that would cause a disruption at school or create a safety concern. An example of some clothes that would cause a disruption are see-through or short shirts, shorts or skirts which do not cover the buttocks, or a backless or very low cut shirt. In discussing this with the students however, I realize that many of them need some guidance from you as to what is and is not appropriate to wear in various settings. (If you looked at the students in the courtyard on some hot days, you would think that I was running a beach club.) Please take some time to discuss the Dress Code with them when they bring it home on Tuesday.

Math Wars for Extra Credit


From Math Teacher Sarah Kirk: 

"Booker T. will be holding a math competition called Math Wars on May 27th during lunch periods. Please encourage your students to sign up. Winners will receive a prize and extra credit in their math classes. Thanks for all your support."

A Thank You for Our Teachers


We are starting to collect for the end of the year teacher gifts! The suggested amount is $40. Cash only, please! The last day we will collect is Monday, June 6 by 9:00 AM. The money will be collected during morning homeroom in the Main Office.

8th Grade Homerooms: 8:00 to 8:40 AM Monday, June 13

6th & 7th Grade Homerooms: 8:00 to 8:40 AM Friday, June 24

New Parent Breakfast

The New Parent Breakfast will be held on Friday, June 10. Parent volunteers are wanted! Email Anne McIntosh Pejovich. We need the following:
  • Set-up crew
  • Meeters and Greeters
  • School Store crew
  • Minglers and Well-Wishers
  • Clean-up crew
It's a great opportunity to meet new parents and to brag about your school. Please join me!

Serve on the PTA Executive Board

Volunteers are needed to serve on the 2015­-2016 PTA Executive Board. It's a great way to get involved at the school and you will have the opportunity to work closely with the school's administration. We are now accepting nominations for the following open positions:

  • President/Co­Presidents
  • Treasurer, Asst Treasurer
  • VP of Fundraising 
  • Recording/Co­Recording Secretary 
  • Corresponding Secretary
  • Grade Representatives for 7th & 8th Grades (6th grade rep will be elected in October)
The Board meets formally once per month, often on the same evening as the general PTA meetings, which Board members are expected to attend as well. Terms are for one year. Elections will be held in June. If you would like to submit your name for the ballot or if you have any questions, please contact the Nominating Committee via Joanna Omi: omijo@mac.com.

New Laptops at MS54


Exciting news! MS54 has won a $35,000 grant for a new laptop cart. This includes new laptops for more than 30 students to use in the classroom.

Thanks so much to all who voted for this important technology upgrade.

Earth Science Regents Review


Earth Science Regents Review continues through the end of the school year. All sessions start at 8 AM promptly, end at 8:40 AM. Students may go to any session, not just their teacher's. Seating and handouts are limited. BE PROMPT.
