Erick's Insights

The future is coming! The future is coming…

Paul Revere’s ride into the Massachusetts countryside warning of the invading British army has to be one of the oldest mass notification warning systems in what would become United States history.  He warned the people in his path of an impending event that would change history.

I am about to leave for the ISC West conference and as I do so I reflect on what new technologies we might encounter.  I will endeavor in this blog to provide some insight on a handful of events I think will change the security landscape in years to come, and I can’t wait to see how many of the new technologies at the conference align with my predictions.
  1. Mass notification systems will be increasingly adopted - (for some of you this isn’t the future, it’s your present; but for most it’s still in the future). A mass notification system encompassing text messaging, reader boards, computer capture display, voice annunciation (both exterior big voice and repurposing of interior voice evacuation systems) and alternate visual annunciation, will be deployed on any significant campus from schools and universities, to military sites, to corporate campuses and high-rises.
  2. Video Analytics will come into their own and become a “can’t live without” powerful tool -Over the next five years video analytics will take a somewhat static investment in video surveillance and transform it into a business tool that we can’t imagine being without.  Much as I can no longer be without my mobile phone which didn’t exist when I was in my teens, video analytics will become an everyday management tool providing a return on investment that we will increasingly take for granted.
  3. The “guard shack” will become virtual - Many activities of the guard shack, including checking manifests, inspecting vehicles, confirming barcodes, checking driver credentials and insurance, will be done remotely with higher efficacy. Case in point: recently we had a customer deploy high resolution cameras to scan the bar codes on shipped products and through automation list all of the bar codes in a sortable file with time-date stamp and attached video image.  It takes the camera seconds to read all of the bar codes with much improved accuracy, where it took a guard thirty or so minutes.
  4. The aggregation of big data and intelligent inquiry will further change the way we use life-safety and security systems - What if you could start to predict patterns of behavior based on billions of bytes of data.  Today it is nearly impossible to imagine processing all of the requisite data or coming up with the right query to provide a relevant prediction; but in the not too distant future (10 to 15 years) I expect that the integration of access control and video surveillance might be so great that if someone presents my code or card but doesn’t have my facial features the system will prevent entry without human intervention –or, conversely, my walking up to the door will simply grant me access; or the system may turn on the lights in the building based on working patterns of the occupants; or the system may not unlock the main entries based on identifying two feet of fresh snow accumulation and no vehicles in the parking lot.
The great thing about looking into the future is that five years from now most of you will not remember I wrote this blog, but I think my predictions will be more right than wrong anyway.

Make it a great day!

Trends & Technology

Latest VMS Version 8.1

The newest video management software, ViconNet 8.1 has been released and is now available for download on our website. This update will improve the system’s stability while enhancing both user experience and overall performance to deliver an exceptionally efficient and cost-effective solution for any size video security system. This release is also in parallel with a new firmware release for IQeye cameras and we recommend that you update your cameras to take advantage of the new integrations and camera features.

New Features and Enhancements:

  • Increased NVR Density - Version 8.1 now offers a significant increase to the number of cameras each NVR can record.
  • Enhanced Vicon Basic Edge-Based Analytics - With version 8.1, Vicon's suite of license-free basic edge-based analytics has been enhanced to show bounding boxes around the detected objects in live and playback. Support of the updated analytics on IQeye cameras requires an update to the camera firmware in addition to ViconNet 8.1.
  • Museum Search with IQeye Cameras - The Museum Search feature in ViconNet, is now available with any current IQeye camera. This popular feature allows ultra-fast search for changes in selected areas of post recorded video. To preview a video clip of this popular and unique feature, click here.
  • Support of New Keypad - This new keypad (VN-KEYPAD) connects and powers the system using a USB cable. The modern design combines with a 3 axis joystick and Jog/Shuttle playback controls to make it easy to use.
  • Addition of Alphabetical Sort of User Groups - We have added a new feature to allow you to sort user groups more logically when configuring their authorization. The groups will now have an option to display in alphabetical order or in the order they were added.
  • Open Alarm Dialog Option - For users who want to be able to open the alarm dialog manually, we have added a new option to right click on the ViconNet main monitoring screen to select Show Alarm Dialog.
  • Installation & Licensing - Any device running ViconNet 8.0 can update to version 8.1 without a need to renew their license or register with Vicon. Devices running ViconNet version older than 8.0 will need to be covered by an enhancement agreement or purchase an upgrade license and register after performing the upgrade.
