Mega-pixel Cameras and Recording Quality Are Changing Granular Information

Have you ever watched the detective show where they use a video recording of a reflection in the mirror of a passing pick-up truck to solve the murder case when the investigator says to the IT tech “enhance that for me”?  For most of the last decade scenes like this would make me cringe because the perception was that we could do something like that.  While this example may be a little extreme, I recently observed the facial features of a pedestrian in the reflection of a store window at 400 yards using one of Avigilon’s 16 mega-pixel cameras from the recorded images.  While watching things live, observing an overview of the activity on the street, I hadn’t even noticed the pedestrian.  But upon review we were able to digitally zoom in on any area of the recording and increase the pixels displayed on the monitor to the maximum quantity recorded.  In doing so I could actually identify our mystery shopper and give you her height, hair color, complexion and a host of other potential identifying features.  In the past our video systems were limited by line count and recording quality with the recording quality often being much worse than the image that was initially displayed on a live video monitor feed.  Today we can record high mega-pixel images which have much greater detail stored in them than we watch live on the monitor, giving us the opportunity to pick out much greater detail upon review than we see live.  While we will never be able to “enhance” non-existent pixels to provide a clearer image, the potential of the quantity of pixels that we can record and store is greater than what we might visually observe ourselves.  Quality of image recorded is rapidly overtaking quantity of images in importance.  The ability to identify a license plate or a person is critical to increasing security and decreasing threat (and in solving that fictional murder).

Your Story

We've heard from several of our customers, and the people their businesses affect, about how their systems have saved lives, saved money, impacted efficiencies or been creative solutions to unique challenges.  We'd love to hear your story too....so if you've got one, and would like to have it published in an upcoming Absco Speak, send it to info@abscosolutions.com.

Customer Highlight

"I just wanted you to know what a professional and outstanding crew you sent out today.  Given that our cabling company failed miserably to get everything set up for your crews camera installation, they jumped right in and did what was necessary to get the job done.  I couldn’t have been more impressed and very pleased the way your crew performed.

The new cameras look fantastic.  Management was blown away at the quality of the video the new cameras provided.

Once again Absco came through with outstanding results.  I will not hesitate to recommend your company to anyone needing CCTV systems.

Thanks again for all your hard work in getting this job done!!"

Columbia Tower Club

Upcoming Professionals Roundtable Events

Avigilon and Identive are partnering with Absco for two events at the Columbia Tower Club in May!  We are  bringing Security Professionals together from the college arena (campus focus) for one event,  and the other event for engineering/consulting firms, to discuss some of today's leading issues and future challenges.  This is a great opportunity to hear what new technology advances are coming, and discuss hot topics with industry peers.  If you're interested in either event, contact Laurie Hauser, at lhauser@abscosolutions.com.

Partnering With The WLS

By being awarded a State contract by the WLS, we are now able to provide discounted services to any educational organization that is or becomes a member of the WLS.  This partnership gives schools and campuses the ability to have Absco implement their video surveillance, access control and/or security services without being forced to undergo the bid process.

Absco has been keeping schools and campuses secure for over 25 years, and we’re looking forward to the new relationships we’ll build as we bring Avigilon, and other educationally focused products to them!
