Policy Update
(Afterschool Alliance) Plans to introduce the bipartisan, bicameral Youth Workforce Readiness Act were announced in the House and Senate by Sen. Smith (D-Minn.) and Rep. Josh Harder (D-Calif.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) in September. The legislation would provide funding for hands-on skills education at afterschool programs for students starting in elementary school and progressing through middle school to high school. Forty-one percent of students express concerns about whether they will have the skills they need to find a job upon graduation. The Youth Workforce Readiness Act complements in-school support by ensuring that students are exposed to a wide array of technical education offerings at afterschool programs starting at age six.

APOST PD
Self-compassion and self-care are necessary components of our overall well-being, and important skills to nurture in order to create more compassionate out-of-school time cultures. As educators and caregivers, we spend much of our time caring for others, but what about ourselves? When grounded in our own sense of care, we're better able to build the emotional capacity to extend that compassion to others. In this workshop, we'll discuss components of social emotional learning, examine the science of self-compassion, engage in compassion based mindfulness practices, and discuss the importance of a supportive community for ourselves and others. Join APOST and our guest presenter, Tina Raspanti on Friday December 13th from 9-11AM for this intriguing and appropriate topic heading into the holiday season!
