NOAA Proposed Workshop at AFS

Hello Everyone,

This will be a short Newsletter. I am helping spread the word on a potential workshop at the American Fisheries Society (AFS) annual meeting. Mark Renkawitz and Timothy Sheehan from NOAA asked that I forward this email along to pop-up tag users.

The workshop itself sounds like a great idea and is something that we have seen have success elsewhere. Everything below is from Mark and Tim directly:

Our names are Mark Renkawitz and Tim Sheehan and we work for NOAA Fisheries Service at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, MA.  We work on a pop-up satellite tagging effort with Atlantic salmon captured at Greenland. During this effort we have encountered numerous challenges associated with capturing fish, applying the tags, auditing the data, and interpreting the results and we assume others utilizing this technology have as well.

Given this, we are considering submitting a proposal to host a symposium at the 2016 American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting in Kansas City, MO to explore this topic further, and are writing to gauge your interest in presenting some of your pop-up satellite tag research.   We are still in the early phases of developing this idea, but the theme would be something along the lines of 'Pop-up satellite tagging - challenges and solutions'. Our hope is that this would provide a platform for researchers to share their experiences with pop-up satellite tags (PSAT) on diverse arrays of species and habitats, and that any ongoing or future projects using PSAT technology would benefit through the collective sharing of the encountered issues and applied solutions.

If we can generate enough interest in this idea we will move forward and submit a proposal to AFS.  We aren’t looking for a firm commitment at this point.  However we would like to gauge if there is sufficient interest.  As such, we are requesting that you consider one of the following responses:
·        absolutely interested and interested in presenting
·        interested and willing to consider a presentation (no commitment)
·        not interested

We are requesting that you please respond to this request by January 10, 2016.  This would give us enough time to ascertain the interest level and decide on a course forward.  Regardless of the ultimate decision, we will certainly follow-up with all respondents to let them know the status of the effort.  Please note that we are not offering any financial support for participation in this effort.

In closing, thank you very much for considering and apologies for the intrusion.  We look forward to hearing back from you and if you want to discuss further, please feel free to get in touch with either one of us directly.  Happy holidays!

Mark and Tim
