MARCH 2020

A Note from Jane

Later this month, I will be attending the Carolina Recycling Association’s annual conference in Raleigh, NC. At the conference, we will share ideas to help make our Carolina recycling programs stronger.

Thanks to the Carolina Association for providing this video showing what happens to plastic bags and film when they get recycled.
Happy March!

Reduce Unnecessary Packaging

Local markets, like Rosewood Market in Columbia and 14 Carrot Whole Foods in Lexington encourage us to bring our own containers and weigh them before and after filling them with bulk purchases. This reduces unnecessary packaging.

No Waste Events

Sonoco Recycling in Columbia celebrates with a delicious lunch each month its wonderful production team meets its goal (which, lucky for us, is nearly every month.)  This month, we hired Tacos Nayarit Mexican Grill. The authentic tacos were delicious, the paper plates and napkins were compostable, no flatware was needed and the drinks were served in recyclable aluminum cans.

Since the tacos were cooked to order, no food was wasted. We recommend this company if you want to plan a no-waste lunch. We hope you will also share your successful no-waste lunch stories with us.

Sonoco News

  • Sonoco Alloyd is now making an all-paper alternative to traditional plastic blister packaging that can be recycled in the paper stream. Progress!
  • Discovery Channel’s “Building Off-Grid” featured “Sonotubes” (pictured below) for pouring concrete foundation pillars. Here is another wonderful product made from the cardboard you recycle.
