JUNE 2020

A Note from Jane

Can you remember what year curbside recycling started in the City of Columbia?
If you guessed 1991, you are correct! Robert Anderson, who was instrumental in starting Columbia’s recycling program, was recently recognized as one of the national 2020 Top Ten Public Works Leaders of the Year for his many notable achievements.

Sonoco Recycling feels honored to have partnered with the City of Columbia’s recycling efforts for nearly 20 years. And now, a new project by the City of Columbia’s Public Works and the Five Points Association is under way to revitalize the parking lot near the fountain. This eco- friendly project will feature new landscaping, lighting, solar-powered pay stations and rubber mulch to help with storm water runoff. Keep up the good work, Columbia Public Works!

Recycling News

Recycle More

The Pulp and Paper Board reports a recent survey showed American households have been recycling 83% more during the pandemic. Learn more about waste reduction and recycling in SC DHEC’s new “Take Action SC” video.

Recycled Art

Local artist Susan Lenz Dingman recently installed an outdoor upcycled art display at Saluda Shoals Park. Susan sewed yellow plastic triangle scraps donated by a South Carolina business into lengths of flags to raise questions about
personal and environmental protection during the COVID-19 crisis. In the language of Maritime quarantine signal flags, yellow was the historical symbol of disease on either a ship or port. A yellow flag also stands for the letter Q, as in quarantine. In the picture to the left, the flags are displayed around a playground closed to the public during the pandemic. Read more here.

Recycling Company

  • Anchor Shred and Recycle Company, a local business, received a Paycheck Protection Plan (PPP) loan to help keep recycling rolling during the pandemic. In a recent letter, Senator Tim Scott applauded owner Gail Wilson’s contributions to both the environmental and economic welfare of our state.
