House and Senate committees voted to extend the expiring trade preference programs. AGOA helps African countries develop by lowering U.S. tariffs for their exports. The reauthorization would extend AGOA for 10 years, including for third-country fabrics to help nature the fledgling textile and apparel industry in Africa.

As the debate over trade policy heats up in Washington and around the country, the Obama administration released this week a report highlighting the positive effects of enhanced U.S. trade and free trade agreements. About half of all the U.S. imports are inputs that businesses use to produce final goods, which lower production costs by making a greater variety of inputs available at lower prices.

The United States, Canada, and the state of Michigan signed an agreement to finance the proposed New International Trade Crossing (NITC) that will link Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
