Advancing Cuban and Cuban-American Studies
CRI Newsletter | Spring 2017

From the Director’s Desk

Dear friends and colleagues,

The past semester brought momentous changes with the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president and the death of Fidel Castro. At the Cuban Research Institute (CRI), we continue to focus on our academic mission of creating and disseminating knowledge about Cuba and its diaspora. At the same time, we strive to make sense of current events and their possible impact on U.S.-Cuba relations.

Last fall, CRI sponsored or cosponsored 26 public events, including a major conference, lectures, panel discussions, book presentations, film screenings, art and photo exhibits, and musical performances.

We invited leading experts to address themes relevant to the study of Cuba and Cuban America, such as Dr. Rafael Rojas, Dr. Eliana Rivero, Dr. Rosa Perelmuter, and Vitalina Alfonso. We also had presentations by younger scholars such as Dr. Michael Bustamante and Petra Kuivala, as well as the science fiction writer Yoss.

In partnership with Books & Books in Coral Gables, we presented recent works on Cuban and Cuban-American topics, including books by Drs. Uva de Aragón and Jorge Salazar-Carrillo.

Last November, together with the Department of Modern Languages, we cosponsored Reading Cuba: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Cuban and Cuban-American Literature. Among the top literary critics and authors who attended the meeting were Dr. Isabel Alvarez-Borland, Dr. Roberto Fernández, Dr. Laura Alonso-Gallo, Elías Miguel Muñoz, and José Prats Sariol.

In December, we organized our traditional Classically Cuban Concert, with the participation of three outstanding performers: pianist José Ruiz Elcoro, soprano Eglise Gutiérrez, and percussionist Héctor Polanco.

Next February we’ll hold the Eleventh Conference on Cuban and Cuban-American Studies, the largest international and interdisciplinary gathering on Cuba and its diaspora.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our many public events this semester!
