2021 1st Quarter

MMT is committed to developing innovative technologies that can be implemented within pipeline integrity management programs to further ensure public and environmental safety.  MMT’s focus in 2021 is to expand in-ditch material verification applications, improve data accuracy and reliability, support PHMSA compliance needs, and deliver reliable equipment, training, and support services. We have recently ramped-up our training program to ensure quality results, and to forward our transition from a service provider to an equipment and data analytic deliverer. We are also continuing to advance the science of pipeline integrity through new product innovations including the HSD 8000, MMTConnect, and the NDTT JIP program initiatives.

MMT has been also progressing our efforts to provide additional nondestructive pipeline attributes through in-ditch material verification. A Joint Industry Program (JIP) with DNV GL and 10 pipeline operators kicked-off in November. This initiative is focused on refining and validating MMT’s capability to nondestructively classify the seam type and estimate regions of the Charpy V-Notch transition curve for Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) pipe joints. The program scope includes discussions with regulators and a review of MMT’s procedures to ensure that this process can be implemented safely and confidently on the long seam of vintage pipelines.

MMT has designated specific dates to hold virtual sessions on how to establish a TVC record for a pipe population. These sessions will include a demonstration of the HSD equipment.

Did you know that MMT offers training and certification on our
equipment? We partner with NDT companies to train and certify Field
Technicians on HSD procedures, to deliver accurate pipeline integrity
data to their customers without the need for destructive testing and
lab testing. In addition to the training program, MMT offers technical
support, maintenance, consumables, and warranties on all equipment
lease and purchases. Contact to schedule your training.
Another milestone was publishing the final report for Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) NDE 2-9 (catalog No. PR-610-183867-R01). This program validated the ability of a new nondestructive testing method, the Nondestructive Toughness Tester (NDTT), to estimate the pipe body fracture toughness of vintage pipelines. MMT is now working on a proposal to apply the findings from this project to validate a portable NDTT instrument suitable for in-ditch testing.

MMT is forming a phase two JIP for our Nondestructive Toughness Tester (NDTT). This work will develop a non-destructive method for material verification of pipe body toughness that complies with requirements in Title 49 CFR 192.607. This will offer a less disruptive and more cost-effective alternative to traditional pipe specimen cut-out and lab testing. We are seeking 10 companies to participate in our 18-month project. Each participant will receive a 100% credit for their investments in future NDTT in-ditch inspection services.

          Scope of this effort includes:

-NDTT Modification & procedure development for in                                situ testing
               -Simulated field-testing calibration and prototyping
               -Simulated field-testing third-party validation
               -PHSMA participation

HSD 8000 will be in the field by June!
Improvements with the new HSD 8000 unit include ease of use, durability, and robustness which will result in a better long-term value for our customers.  Six HSD 8000 units are scheduled for delivery to the field on June 1st, with additional units delivered in the September timeframe. MMT also maintains an inventory of 12 HSD 7000 units, with the same functionality, to cover any other equipment needs.
PHMSA Trail Audit
As the effective date of enforcement of the new gas transmission rule approaches, MMT is partnering with PHMSA and Operators for a trial audit in Q1 that will address operator and vendor compliance on material verification processes. These simulated audits will provide clarity on regulator expectations of the new requirements, and how MMT can work with operators to establish and implement recommended practices for nondestructive material verification. Stay tuned for the expected outcomes!
