Seed preparation workshop (State NRM)
ERF’s State NRM project 14030, Connecting the Gaps, involves revegetation and protection of a creek line on the Walter’s family property at Cascade. As part of this project, direct seeding of a mix of native seeds will be used on 8ha of the target site this growing season. ERF has put out a call for help with the preparation of the seeds for this project. South Coast NRM project officer Claudia Magana will be running the workshop, which will involve a variety of preparation techniques used to increase the germination rates of native seeds, including smoking. This is a great chance for ERF members and other interested members of the community to learn some new skills, while helping ERF with a project that is revitalising our landscape, protecting the Stokes Inlet, and helping local farmers care for their land.

ERF committee member and Esperance Growers Market stalwart supporter, Yvette Mansted, is a person who is deeply committed to local food production. Currently serving as the market organiser, Yvette is the friendly face that greets new stallholders when they arrive, and a vendor whose caramelised beetroot preserve is now legendary among locals. Yvette was born in to a farming family, and now belongs to a family of professional fishers.
“I have been involved in the Esperance commercial fishing industry since I met Neville in 1980.”
As a consequence of the fact that her husband Neville has been the president for years of the Esperance Professional Fishermen’s Association for years, she is aware of the politics of food production and market vagaries.
With such a background, it is no wonder supporting local primary producers is such a passion!
During a recent ABC interview with reporter Tara de Landgrafft (“Esperance primary producers supported through Boots for Change initiative”, WA Country Hour, Yvette spoke of her commitment to providing an outlet for locally grown food via the markets.
“…you can't encourage people to actually get out there and grow their own food, if they haven't got an outlet for it," she said. "Because we're such a distance from other places that do grow food, this is the best place to get your fresh produce, by buying it locally. It's all about growing your own food and supporting local growers and farmers and producers.

Putting on the Boots for Change.
Around 16 stallholders and 500 people combined to make the Esperance Growers Market Boots for Change event, held on April 30, a great success. Vendors and visitors to the markets alike took the “boots” theme on board and there was an amazing array of boots on the move, both on feet and in the air as part of the Blundstone Boot Throwing Competition.
The Boot Planter Workshop was a great success, with the supply of pre-loved and much worn out Rossis, Blundies and other workboots totally depleted by the market’s close. A sausage sizzle raised $67 for the Nulsen Primary School, and the media coverage of the event was terrific, with the ABC interest reflecting the fact that the Boots for Change project was borne of the ABC Heywire program: it was a project devised and implemented by some of the young people who participated in the Heywire program and decided that they wanted to work on a project that would help focus attention of food producers and their role in society…and maybe encourage more people to get involved. Market participants threw their support behind the day and Esperance has indicated to the Australian Farmers Market Association (the body that implemented the project) that it is interested in putting its best market boots forward again next year.

Grow Local : Skills for Sustainability
Fermenting workshop
As part of the Grow Local project, Esperance foodie Karli Florisson presented a free workshop on fermented foods. Held at the CWA Hall on James Street on May 21, this workshop was a great success with places filled soon after it was advertised. Feedback from the workshop to date has been positive: participants had a great time, learned lots and enjoyed some good food and company along the way.
During the process of preparing for the workshop, ERF had a chat to Karli about her passion for good food, and, just in case you missed the resulting bio on facebook, we have included it here for your enjoyment!

Karli is a home-grown Esperance foodie who has travelled the world, loves people, dogs, the spectacular local beaches, her family, her friends …and food!
It is her love for her family and friends that have kept her in Esperance despite the fact that she has spent time in exotic locations like Kazakhstan, where she worked for a while as a volunteer in a rehabilitation centre and refuge, teaching English.It is her love of good, healthy food that has resulted in her willingly taking up the task of presenting ERF’s Grow Local Fermentation workshop.
After returning to Esperance from central Asia a few years ago, Karli started Bella Café. For 18 months the Dempster Street café produced delicious fast food that tantalised taste buds, while including the always sought after staple of hot chips! For 18 months Karli ran the café, but that was not where her relationship with food started.
“I think I became more interested in food after working in the hospitality industry, at the Taylor Street Tearooms and the Comfort Inn.My interest was probably sparked earlier than that though: my mother is an amazing cook and a real foodie.”
Changes in her personal circumstances resulted in a career shift and she spent a few years working with Teen Challenge, mostly in a mentoring role, before returning to a life revolving around food. This time the focus is on healthy food and inspiring people to eat and prepare healthy meals, with pop-up cafes and cooking classes on the menu.
“We have done a bit of catering and some healthy food workshops where, along with a naturopath, we presented information about good food.” Karli thinks that people are becoming more and more aware of healthy food, and returning to more traditional foods. “Such foods are generally healthier than the super processed foods we have been eating.” During the Grow Local Fermenting Workshop, Karli will pass on her skills in preparing and enthusiasm for foods like sauerkraut and kafir, which are easy to prepare, flavoursome…and healthy!

Patch From Scratch Workshop.
On Sunday 29th May ERF hosted their second workshop in the "Grow Local" series, with 'Patch from Scratch' taking place despite the chilly weather. The Organic Mechanic, Bron Brennan, presented a hands on event with participants learning the necessary skills to produce a thriving veggie patch, from scratch! Covering a broad range of topics including the removal of old garden material, a healthy soil, drip line irrigation and installation, crop rotation, mulch and composting, and grouping and planting of seedlings. Everyone dug in and got their hands dirty and the results speak for themselves!

Revegetation and Fencing
We are seeking expressions of interest for revegetation and fencing projects in the Esperance Region, in particular areas that are within the Lake Warden, Lake Gore and Stokes Inlet Catchments. The funding provided is an incentive to help get your projects underway supported by South Coast NRM and the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme. Your interest will be assess according to catchment priorities and funding criteria. Please contact Esperance Project Officer Claudia Magaña (0457 458 000 or to see if you are eligible for revegetation and fencing incentives.
Past project participants have benefited from improved landscapes and protected unique native bushland.
