The Carpool Years

Here’s something that I don’t remember reading in the many parenting books I devoured when the kids were very young: Yes, teaching them to sleep is brutal, but once you do YOU BETTER FREAKING ENJOY IT before they hit their tween years.

For our family, the weeknight extracurricular/homework/carpooling/sleep situation seemed to increase gradually and then shoot off like a rocket. Now our days begin with 4 out of 5 of us awake well before dawn and then struggling to get to bed at a reasonable time every night. (In case you’re wondering how that’s working out, look for me in the carpool line taking my daily power nap.)

I realize every year our story and our routine changes, so I’m trying to roll with this phase of parenting. I’m calling these The Carpool Years. If you’re also out there in the trenches or snoozing between school pick-up times, I salute you! Have another cup of coffee, compadre.

With that in mind, I have an opportunity that might fit into your busy life. For two Sundays in October I’m offering mini photo sessions in central Austin. They won’t steal much of your day and are a great way to get family photos for holiday cards or gifts. See below for details and email me to schedule.

When I wasn’t driving or snoozing in my car, I was finding things worth sharing:

• My almost empty-nester friend Nancy is wondering how she spent the pre-kid years.
Has Anyone Seen These Kids?

Jessica Lahey created a guide that’s packed with great (and sane!) advice for the homework-heavy years.
Thanks for your enthusiasm and support!
