GENIVI Expands its Connectivity Solutions Through Collaboration with Open Connectivity Foundation

GENIVI is moving aggressively into the connected vehicle space and attracting attention from many organizations working in the growing Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. At CES 2016, GENIVI was approached by the Open Interconnectivity Consortium (OIC) and by Samsung specifically to explore extending the GENIVI Demo Platform (GDP) to interact with a “connected home” prototype.  During Mobile World Congress, OIC joined forces with the AllSeen Alliance to re-launch as the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), which has the goal to help unify IoT standards so that companies and developers can create IoT solutions and devices that work seamlessly together. The open source project IoTivity provides a reference implementation of the OCF specifications
Meanwhile, the work on the car-to-home prototype has been progressing leveraging both the Remote Vehicle Interaction (RVI) project and the GDP.  Samsung and GENIVI will develop a demonstration of a GENIVI-based headunit connected to a home equipped with OCF-based devices at the upcoming GENIVI spring All-Member Meeting in Paris.  The IoTivity release 1.0.0 will be used for the demonstration.

The project’s long term goals include:
  • Identify which technologies support the interaction between the car and the home and determine which could become the basis for standardization and implementation
  • Identify and adopt a standards-based (IETF, OCF) resource model which addresses the needs of OCF and GENIVI and thus, eliminate the need for a gateway based translation approach
  • Derive requirements for developing the OCF automotive profile base and drive standardization and certification efforts within OCF.
More info about the demonstrator architecture and use cases is available here.

News from GENIVI's Annual Board of Directors Meeting

Each March, the GENIVI board of directors gathers for its annual meeting to complete some essential business and also to discuss progress on annual strategic initiatives.  Last week, the board transacted two important pieces of business about which members should be informed.

First, the board completed its annual election process and seated the 2016-2017 board of directors.  GENIVI would like to congratulate the following companies and their primary board representative to the board of directors:
Elected Charter (two-year term)
  • Luxoft (Georg Doll)
 Elected Core (one-year term)
  • Harman International (Kyle Walworth)
  • Hyundai Motor Group (Paul Choo)
  • Pelagicore (Alwin Bakkenes)
  • PSA (Armando Hernandez)
The board wishes to express its appreciation to Dr. Andree Zahir, Bosch Car Multimedia, Dr. Thomas Hollmann, Continental and Anup Sable, KPIT for their valuable service over the last year – and beyond for some. Please join me in appreciating these organizations and individuals who have worked very hard on behalf of the alliance in their role as GENIVI directors.
A second major business item, the board of directors also agreed to extend the board election with the intent of attempting to fill the three remaining elected charter seats. The board invited GENIVI members to consider upgrading to the Charter level and nominating themselves for one of the three open seats. Nominations must be received (name or organization and name of primary board representative) no later than 24 March 2016. To submit a nomination or ask a question, please contact Steve Crumb (

Bosch Car Multimedia Case Study

The GENIVI Alliance was launched with a mission of driving the broad adoption of open source, In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) software. The alliance work has resulted in shortened development cycles, faster time to market, and reduced costs for companies developing IVI software. Bosch Car Multimedia is one of those companies benefiting from their use of GENIVI’s open model.

In this recently completed case study, metrics from multiple production programs led by Bosch and their joint venture ADIT are presented as data points that demonstrated their success using GENIVI’s open source approach and their adoption of GENIVI’s open source IVI platform. The case study is available here and we welcome you to distribute it within your organization and to colleagues in the marketplace. GENIVI is actively seeking content for additional case studies using GENIVI’s open model.  If you have ideas, please contact Steve Crumb (

Open Positions in GENIVI Operations

The GENIVI Alliance requires a significant number of resources to perform our work effectively and efficiently.  From time to time, GENIVI makes available to its members the opportunity to fill one or more operational positions before taking the role to the public. In that regard, GENIVI is actively seeking to fill two positions:  IT Manager/Wikimaster and Open Source Software Maintainer (GENIVI Demo Platform - GDP).  Full descriptions of both roles can be found here. Interested candidates should send a recent CV/Resume to Steve ( by the end of March.
