 1.  Training:  We've set the training schedule for August:
  • August 17 -- New coach training with the NXT - Melbourne
  • August 24 -- Coach training with the EV3 or NXT - Rockledge
Cost for the training is $25 for the day long class which includes lunch.  The class on 8/17 will be at Stone MS in Melbourne and the one on 8/24 will be at Golfview ES in Rockledge.   Registration for the classes is open on our website at http://flrobotics.org/events/default.html .  Pre-registration is required since space is limited.

2.  Kickoff:  Registration is now open for Kickoff at  http://flrobotics.org/events/default.html .   The Florida FLL Kickoff will be at Stone Middle School,  1101 E University Blvd, Melbourne on Saturday, September 7.  There are three sessions, each last 90 minutes starting at 9am, 11am and 1:30pm.  Register for your preferred time.  You will need an estimate of how many students and how many adults will be attending.  Coaches, team members and parents are invited.  Siblings are welcome as well, but the program really isn't suitable for very young children.   One coach per team will receive a free Florida FLL Polo shirt if you register prior to August 29.  Additional shirts are available for purchase -- $20 pre-order, $25 on site.

3.  EV3 Update:  The EV3's are shipping now.  (We received ours on 8/6)  If you purchased your EV3 through FIRST, it includes software, but you have to download it.  Included in the box with the transformer is a sheet that gives you the download link and the Key Code required to get it.  When you get to the download site, select the "see more files" option at the bottom.  For PC users, you want to download the Win32 version of the file.  Mac users will download the OS version.

The software will run on the following Windows systems:  XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.  For Macs, it runs on 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.  It requires a minimum of 2GB Ram and 1.5 GHz processor as well as a 1024x600 screen resolution.  It doesn't run on tablets and some netbooks.

The EV3 has options for using Bluetooth and WiFi.  Both of these must be DISABLED for competitions.

4.  Qualifying Competitions:  Registration fee for Qualifying Competitions will be $75.  We hope to open registration for Qualifying Competitions on October 1.  You will only be allowed to register for ONE tournament during the first two weeks.  On Oct. 15, you will be allowed to register for SECOND (optional) tournament.  We will post a preliminary list of tournament dates and locations on our website on September 15 however there may be additional events added before registration opens.

The tournament schedule will be broken into 2 parts, early tournaments and late tournaments.  You will only be able to register for one early tournament and one late tournament.  If you don't register for an early tournament, you will only be able to compete at ONE tournament.  Early tournaments are those between November 9 and December 7.  Late tournaments will be between December 14 to January 18.  Presently, all Qualifying tournaments are scheduled for Saturday.

Tournament availability is based on schools volunteering to host the event.  We cannot guarantee you will be able to find an event close to you.

5.  Regional/State Competitions:  You must qualify to compete at a Regional.  Registration fee for Regional is $100.  The tentative schedule for Regionals is on Feb 1 and Feb 8.  Specific dates for locations has not been determined but there will be regionals in Brevard County (both dates), Orlando area, Tampa, Panama City and South Florida.

The State Championship is currently planned for Sunday, March 2 in Orlando, but this may change.  Registration for the State Championship is $125.  Participation in the State Campionship is by qualifying at a Regional.

6.  Qualifying Tournament Hosts Needed:  Because of the continued growth in the number of teams in Florida, we continue to seek new qualifying tournaments.  We particularly need new hosts in the Central Florida and South Florida areas.  If your team/school is interested in hosting a tournament, checkout the details at http://flrobotics.org/QTournement/QTApp1.htm   If you have questions, email Laura at flrobotics@gmail.com
