We are still accepting grant applications from schools (public or private) in Brevard and surrounding areas for Rockwell Collins grants. (You must be in reasonable commuting distance of Melbourne to qualify for this grant.) Apply online at http://flrobotics.org/money/default.html
Brevard County FLL and FTC teams should also be on the lookout for additional grant opportunities from the NASA Ground Systems Development and Operations Program. These grants will be targetted to bolster FLL and FTC in Brevard County. NASA will be announcing significant grant opportunities for these teams in the near future. We will also post information on these grants on our website when it is available.
Coach Training Class
We still have room for a few more people in our Coach Training Class to be held on Saturday, Aug 23 in Merritt Island. Information and registration are at http://flrobotics.org/events/default.html
Tournament and Open Practice Hosts
We are looking for hosts for both Qualifying Tournaments and Open Practices. Information and applications are on-line at http://flrobotics.org/QTournement/QTApp1.htm Running an event is a great opportunity for raising funds for your team if your school does not charge for use of the facility. We depend on schools hosting Qualifying Tournaments to make FLL available to everyone in Florida.
We will be holding Kickoff for the season either in Merritt Island or Melbourne on Saturday, September 13. There will be two sessions -- one at 9:30 and one at 12:30. One coach per team attending will receive a free Florida FLL Polo shirt. This event is for coaches, team members, and parents. There is no charge to attend but you will have to register for a session, indicating which session you prefer and how many students/adults will be attending. We should have the facility identified and open registration by 8/14. During this program, Laura will review all the missions and rules, a review of the field setup and how points are scored. She will also review the Research project requirements. The list of Qualifying tournaments and our tournament registration process will be provided. We do not expect to make this program available online but will post the presentations.
Field setup kit hints
Field setup kits are now shipping. Open your set as soon as possible and check to see if you have all of the bags of parts. It takes 7-10 days to get a replacement so don't wait until you start building. You will have to describe some unique parts in the missing bag or some parts in the bags you have. Call LEGO at 800-835-4386. Don't select the number for missing parts. Stay on hold for a customer service rep. They will need the set number: 45800. For missing parts (not a whole bag) you can follow the instructions in the Coach's Manual, page iii.

You can download and print or view on your computer, IPad, etc. There is a great list of contacts for problems, etc on pages ii-iii as well as great information on the general requirements for the season. Specific information on missions and research project will be released online on August 26.

Brevard Robotics Showcase -- Teams Needed
The Canaveral Council of Technical Societies is hosting an event at the Florida Solar Energy Center in Cocoa on Thursday evening, October 16 at 5:30pm. We would like 6-8 Brevard teams to participate in this event which will be similar in format for FLL as an open practice but with the public coming thru to observe/talk with teams about FLL. This event is being structured to educate the community (particularly the technical society members) about the various robotics programs available in Brevard. There will also be FRC, FTC and VEX teams demonstrating as well as other exhibits. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided for teams participating. This event replaces the FLL Open Practice held at Roosevelt the last two years. We will also be training referees at this event.

As you should know, registration and ordering is now a two step process. This may complicate things for you a bit. The purchaser can register the team but will have to pay for the registration fee ($225, no shipping) before you will have an option to order the Field Setup. This payment goes to FIRST. They do accept a PO from schools.
After your team registration is paid, you will get a link to order FLL materials. This order will be thru LEGO Education so you will need a second Purchase Order for your Field Setup and/or Robot Kit.
Youth Protection Program (YPP)
Each team is required to have two "coaches" entered into the system and cleared through the YPP. The second coach identified doesn't need to be someone who is actively coaching. It may be a parent that helps out occasionally or a teacher contact at the school. The clearance process doesn't cost you anything (unless you choose to pay for it) and last month only took about 24 hours. I expect the turnaround time may take longer now that schools are opening. You will also have to enter your list of team members with their parents contact information prior to attending any events since the Consent Form process is now going to be online. You do not have to enter the team member data when you initially register. Before attending a competition, you will also have to print and bring your team roster from TIMS but won't have to bring consent forms for any students whose parents have completed the process online.
For Event Registration, we are still planning on registering through our Florida FLL website: www.flrobotics.org Details will be provided in September when we finalize the Qualifying Tournament schedule. Event registration costs will be the same as last year: $75 for Qualifying Tournament, $100 Regional Tournament, $125 for State Championship.
