🇹🇭 Three cheers for this tasty news from Pom Pom's

PLUS, Gov. DeSantis says we need more vaccines, not government assistance.

Welcome to Thursday, y’all.

It’s been a big week so far: New president; new veep; another grim milestone of COVID-19 deaths; the MegaMillions is still up for grabs; three Central Floridians became almost-millionaires; I ate my whole bowl from Super Rico in one sitting. (Okay, one of those is not like the others — not even close. Just trying to lighten a heavy load.)

But that was Monday through Wednesday, and this is Thursday. Today, we’re catching you up on news about one of Orlando’s most coveted (if not the most coveted) sandwich shops, an update about a cool “new” spot coming to downtown, a new heavyweight contender for the title of best ramen in town, the latest from Gov. DeSantis’ on the COVID-19 vaccine, and who said what about yesterday’s inauguration.

But first, let’s start with this scene from my neighborhood walk that always warms my heart (and my reading apprehension skills!).

This house on East Concord Street in Lake Eola Heights always makes me smile with its adult- and kid-friendly little free libraries. Is there a Little Free Library in your neighborhood? If not, want one? Here's how to get started. | (📸: @focomike for Pulptown)

What Orlando is talking about

🇹🇭 Our friend Pom Moongauklang of Pom Pom’s Teahouse and Sandwicheria fame is launching a new pop-up concept at the end of the month. She’s planning on nodding to her roots and serving comfort food from her childhood growing up in Isaan, the northeastern region of Thailand. Bungalower’s got the menu here. P.S. Get to know more about Pom in this video the Pulptown team produced in Nov. 2018.

🏗 The plans for CityArts’ outdoor courtyard space in downtown Orlando will blow you away. The alleyway sitting between the Roger Kiene Building where CityArts is located and The Harp and Celt is set to make a stunning transformation. Bungalower shared early renderings last week and Orlando Weekly provided even more detail yesterday. Between the art, the benches, and the design, we’re excited. Editor’s note: If you haven’t yet, snag tix to an upcoming show at the CityArts’ In-Between Series. It’s a monthly outdoor musical event held in the alleyway.

🍜 Orlando foodie reporter Faiyaz Kara says he knows where to find Orlando’s best ramen. Head to Orlando Weekly for his take on Ramen Takagi in Oviedo and learn why he considers it such a strong contender in the world of local ramen heavyweights.

💉 Gov. Ron DeSantis said that Florida doesn’t need federal assistance to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine — we just need more vaccine doses. He was speaking in response to the Biden administration’s plan to bring in FEMA and the National Guard to hasten the vaccine rollout. So far, 1.1 million people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in Florida and more than 111,000 have received the follow-up booster shots. Here’s more from Florida Politics.

🛣 Rep. Anthony Sabatini wants to rename a local highway after former President Donald Trump. He plans to introduce a bill to rename the U.S. Highway 27 from Miami to Tallahassee as the “President Donald J. Trump Highway” to “honor one of the greatest presidents in American history”. WESH has the latest.

⛔️ Disney’s Hall of Presidents at Magic Kingdom is closed for refurbishments as cast members work to update the attraction with President Biden’s animatronic lookalike. Just this week, the Sentinel published an editorial calling for the attraction to close permanently. 👉 More about the animatronic action on Orlando Sentinel.

🇺🇸 Wondering what Florida lawmakers had to say about yesterday’s inauguration? Orlando Sentinel’s got the scoop.
