🏗 Locals are clashing with property developers over plans to demolish one of Miami Beach’s most infamous homes. The Miami Design Preservation League is among the groups speaking out over developer Todd Michael Glaser’s intention to dismantle the oceanside mansion that once belonged to notorious mob boss Al Capone. An online petition asking the City of Miami Beach to intervene and preserve the historic property had collected 490 signatures as of writing. (Miami New Times)

🕯 Tomorrow marks the passage of 20 years since the 9/11 attacks. A number of memorials are taking place across Miami-Dade to commemorate the tragic event, the reverberations of which are still palpably felt two decades onward. The full list of events can be found at the following link. ➡️ (CBS Miami)

😷 Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration is not backing down on school mask mandates without a fight. The governor’s office filed an appeal on Wednesday night to reinstate the statewide ban preventing school districts from requiring students and staff to wear face masks. Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper previously invalidated DeSantis’ executive order and determined it was an overreach of his constitutional authority. (WLRN / News Service of Florida)

📉 Hospitalizations for COVID-19 are trending downward in Florida following last month’s peak. As reported by Local 10, CDC data shows that “The 7-day moving average for new cases in the state is 14,297, the lowest since July 27.” During August — the deadliest month of the pandemic in Florida so far — approximately “21,000 new infections were being reported per day on average.” (Local 10)

📰 One of the contractors involved with the construction of Champlain Towers South relinquished his license after being accused of “mismanagement, incompetence and fraud” across two decades according to a new Miami Herald report. The story spares no words in detailing how the team responsible for building the collapsed condo was riddled with controversy, noting that it was “helmed by a developer charged with tax evasion in Canada, an engineer who oversaw a bungled municipal garage in Coral Gables, and an architect who temporarily lost his license for poor designs.” (Miami Herald)

🚨 Before he became a prominent figure in the country’s culture wars as a leader of the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio was just another Miami kid. The long-form feature on Tarrio’s Flagami childhood and descent into the alt-right by Miami New Times staff writer Joshua Ceballo is a must-read. (Miami New Times)

THANK YOU EVERYONE for making this year’s #IAMMDC Day a total success. (If you missed last weekend’s festivities, check out the highlights.)

Because of our wonderful sponsors, Miami Dade College teams, community members and wonderful alumni, we raised more than $1.4 million dollars.

Those are funds that will help our students with scholarships and emerging needs, which is especially important during these challenging times. Our community’s support and encouragement have always been the driving factors in the lives of our students.

And we'll need your support to continue our impact. It’s not too late to support a student.
