Plus, Introducing your picks for the Elite 8 of Orlando's beer scene.

By Katie Johnston

Hi there from the sunny, okay cloudy, Florida Panhandle.

That’s where I am, hanging with the fam for the week. So far, I’ve enjoyed 13 rounds of Phase 10, one too many peanut butter balls, and at least one quick dip in the gulf with five of the cutest nieces and nephews you’ve ever seen.

With that said, by the next time I write to you, I hope I’ve increased my Phase 10 playtime tenfold, I secure my reign as the all-time favorite aunt, and that I return to Orlando bronzed, not baked. That’s right, I’m taking the next four days off to soak up some family fun which means no more newsletters this week. But don’t fret, I’ll still be hanging out on Facebook and Instagram

In the meantime, here’s a cool pic of the latest wall to go up at Wall Crawl and down below, you’ll find news on the Orlando Magic’s new head coach, the city’s new cricket team, and why Wayne Brady is in town. Plus, I’ll be revealing the Elite Eight of Orlando beers, according to you.

Let’s get to it, shall we? 👇

When’s the last time you visited Wall Crawl? The studio/selfie warehouse in Parramore updates its 20-something walls seasonally and this new Lake Eola-themed one by artist @kaluohs is a crowd-pleaser. 📸 Thanks for the tag, @kaluohs. | Wanna see your photo here? What Orlando is talking about

🇨🇺 Hundreds of Orlando Cubans and allies gathered in front of Sedano's Supermarket on Semoran Boulevard over the weekend to show support for the current protests happening in Havana. The island, currently subject to U.S. financial sanctions, is experiencing unrest amid rising costs, food shortages, and blackouts in addition to devastation from the coronavirus pandemic. 🏆 Did you watch The Espy's on Sunday? If so, you might've recognized a familiar face. Maitland's own Chris Nikic was this year's winner of the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. He made headlines last year for being the first person with Down Syndrome to complete an Ironman triathlon. Nikic's speech is a must-listen (or read) and you can do so at the link. 👉 (Orlando Sentinel)

🏀 It’s official — the Orlando Magic has a new leader at the helm. Jamahl Mosley is our new head coach and comes to Orlando by way of a seven-year stint as the assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks. (Bungalower

😷COVID-19 numbers are on the rise yet again in Orange County. Mayor Jerry Demings said yesterday that even fully vaccinated people should reconsider wearing masks in crowded places. Cases have continued to go up week over week, doubling to 400 new daily cases to last week's 200. Demings clarified that it wasn't an order, but a strongly suggested recommendation. (Orlando Sentinel)

  • Related: The Orange County School Board is scheduled to vote today on next school year’s mask policy. Some say the district shouldn’t lift the mask mandate since the more contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 is currently making its rounds; others say enough is enough and that masks should be optional. 🚘 A huge car auction is rolling into town later this month. Mecum Auctions is bringing over 1,000 collector cars to the Orange County Convention Center. Vintage muscle cars, antique trucks, modern supercars — they’ll all be up for bid July 28-31 along with motorcycles, tractors, and road art. (Orlando Sentinel

🏡 Wayne Brady is returning to his hometown of Orlando this weekend. The actor and comedian is the first guest celebrity of the new CBS show, “Secret Celebrity Renovation'' and in the episode, Brady heads to Tangelo Park to renovate his childhood home. The show airs Friday at 8 p.m. (WKMG)

🎉 Congrats are in order…

For Lara B. Chris S., John H., Matthew H., Jeff, Nick B., Cathy, Adly S., Arielle R., Dan M., Milaura S., Monica A. and Ted B. All 13 of them knew exactly what hotel I was referencing in last week’s trivia question.

I asked what hotel is named after the body of water that is the source of the Florida Everglades.

That source is Shingle Creek. The hotel? Rosen Shingle Creek Resort.

🍻 Presenting the Elite Eight of Orlando’s Ultimate Beer Bracket

Did your nominee make it to the Elite Eight? (🎨: Pulptown illustration)

Alright, alright, alright.

We’ve made it to the Elite Eight of our Ultimate Orlando Beer Bracket 🍻 and here’s what we’ve learned so far:

  • Orlandoans aren’t really partial when it comes to types of beer. You’re equal fans of a Kölsch as you are a sour or an IPA.
  • You like a good competition — this week, we saw over 6,000 votes.
  • In four short weeks, we’ve gone from 60-something nominations of good beers in this town — proving we have a ton of options! — to EIGHT. And, it’s not just different beers you like, but different brewers too. For once, we have no repeat breweries!
  • I’ve now got well over 30-something beers to add to my must-try list, and I’d assume the same goes for you. If anyone ever wants to meet up for a day of taste-testing these, say four at a time, sign me up.

😔 This week, we said goodbye to:

🎉 But they all hung on for tight races against our Elite Eight, specifically the Pulp Friction and the TrHopical Fusion IPA. Heading into the week ahead, the showdown continues with:

So, who will it be folks? What four beers will advance to the next round in our Ultimate Orlando Beer Bracket? That’s up to you. 📊

Vote here by 9 a.m. on Monday, July 19 to see who’s moving on.

📌 As a reminder — our bracket is not here to find the “best” local brew, because “best” means something different to everybody. But we are here to highlight the beers and breweries that Orlando really loves and which ones you feel best represent our fair city.

Let the voting commence.

One more thing

I know I said it at the top of today’s newsletter, but just reminding you that I won’t be in your inboxes again for a whole week. I’m taking some time off to reset and recharge (really, I’ll just be throwing my nieces and nephews in the pool) and I hope you’ll understand that it’s not you, it’s me. 😜

You can still find me reminding you about the bracket over on our social media, and I’ll still be sharing my daily findings with ya in Pulptown’s Instagram stories. Oh, and the podcast is on pause through July 26 when I’ll return with a very special guest. 😉

See you in your inboxes on Tuesday, if I don’t catch you elsewhere before then!
