🔮 Yer a wizard — er, kind of — at least at this new Ballard pub

Plus: Tell us what Olympic events you’re watching.

By Grace Madigan

Hello there, it’s another Tuesday.

I hope you’ve all been enjoying the Olympics as much as I have. Over the weekend I watched the debut of both surfing and skateboarding, and even though I had no clue as to how the scoring or rules worked, I was captivated. Two 13-year-old kids took home gold and silver for the street skateboarding competition, and in my humble opinion, that is kind of mind-blowing.

Poll time: Which events/athletes are you most looking forward to watching? Let me know

And if you’re wondering which Olympians to root for that call Washington home, Seattle Met put together a pretty thorough list for ya right here

Today, we’ve got news on a new wizard-themed pub coming to Ballard, how the pandemic inspired a spike in tattoos, and a game of trivia for our Evergrey Extra members. So keep on scrolling!

4 things Seattle is talking about

➡️ Eight people were shot, three of them fatally, in four different neighborhoods over a span of three hours on Sunday morning. The incidents reflect an uptick in gun violence in the county this past year. The mayor and Interim Seattle police Chief Adrian Diaz announced last week that the city had allocated over $10 million to give to 33 community organizations in the coming year with half going to increasing safety for communities of color. (The Seattle Times)

💪 Add some ink during the pandemic? You’re not alone. Local tattoo artists have noticed an uptick in demand for their art in the past year and a half. The art form has been around for thousands of years, and according to a sociologist at York University in Toronto, tattoos offer “a physical reminder of the human experience.” They also have a strong connection to traumatic events which is likely a reason for the spike in tattoos. (Editor’s note: My two new tattoos during this time period prove the above to be true.)  (KUOW)

🔮 So yer a wizard, or at least want to be? Well, you can live out that dream at the new wizard-themed pub, The Splintered Wand, set to open by the end of the month in Ballard. The owners of the shop have personas they go by at the shop along with a back story that reveals they're 300-year-old wizards with roots in Europe. Let the bartenders be your alchemists here before heading up to the wand shop on the second floor. Because the demand for visiting the new pub is high, you’re going to need to make a reservation. (MyBallard)

🍴 Get a taste of West African food at this new pop-up. While there are a plethora of Ethiopian, Eritrean, and Somali places in the Seattle area, there’s a lack of West African dining establishments. But, thanks to the new pop-up, Gold Coast Ghal, folks will have one more place where they can get plantains and jollof rice. Look for the pop-up on Sundays and Mondays at Gold Bar over in South Lake Union. (Seattle PI)

Don’t forget to vote! The deadline to turn in your ballot to a drop box is next Tuesday at 8 p.m. If you’d like to return it via mail, you DON’T need a stamp, you just need to be sure it’s postmarked by Election Day. The county recommends getting it in the mail by this Friday to make sure it’s postmarked on time.

If you need help figuring out who’s on the ballot, we made a guide which you can find over on our website

Thanks for reading, we’ll see ya tomorrow!
