🌮 Birria, doughnuts, tacos, beers... it's all in here

Plus, now how will we ever know when Pub Subs are on sale?

Hey there, happy hump day.

Look, I know it’s trendy to talk about tacos on a Tuesday, but here we are, on a Wednesday, about to have taco talk instead. And not just any tacos, birria tacos, y’all.

Kim here 👇 said she tried the birria tacos from MX Taco on Taco Tuesday (in the middle of Orlando Taco Week no less) and she swears the hype surrounding birria is real. We’ve had this conversation before in a previous newsletter, and I’m just wondering: Am I the only one here who still hasn’t tried a birria anything?

What am I missing? Who has the best birria in town? Am I failing my readers by not delivering the taco facts? Local foodie Emi Newman says Antojitos Locos is king when it comes to birria tacos. What says you? Where should I spend all my money (and daily calories)? I’ll go wherever you tell me but you’ve gotta slide into my inbox to give me the scoop.

Alright, enough about tacos. Let’s taco bout a dope new salad spot, the Hall on the Yard (yes, one day, it will open!), a new brewery, a new doughnut shop, and a new bowling alley/bocce/pizza place. And then, we’ll talk to Emi about hands-down her favorite meal in town. Cool? Cool.

Kim is out here living her best Orlando Taco Week life, making us all jealous of her birria tacos from MX Taco. 📸: @kimsinflorida | Wanna see your photo here? Tag either #pulptown or @pulptown on Instagram to be featured as our IG of the Day!

What Orlando is talking about

🥗 For my fellow herbivores, there’s a new restaurant in East Orlando that needs to be on your radar. CHOP5 is a fast-casual eatery pumping out chopped salads and fresh bowls near UCF. (Tasty Chomps on Instagram

🍽 The Hall on the Yard has been teasing its new tenants over on Instagram, like Pasión who will soon hatch its Hatch Green Chile Chicken Taquitos. Then there’s also Fork & Hen, a new southern comfort food spot coming to the food hall. When? That’s still anybody’s guess, but the Hall on the Yard promises soon.  (The Hall on Yard on Instagram)

🍻 A new brewery just opened on the bottom floor of the Amway Center. Big Storm Brewing is a craft brewery with locations all over the state, though this is its first in Central Florida. It’d be a great place to grab a brew before or after a Magic game. (Bungalower

🍩 There’s a new doughnut shop downtown. It’s called Pattie Lou’s and it opened in the library parking garage on Pine Street this week. You can snag mini donuts for now during its soft opening but expect bigger ones when the grand opening rolls around. (Bungalower

🎳 Word on the street is that Chicago-based Pinstripes plans to open a location on I-Drive in the now axed-Aloma Drafthouse spot. The popular Chicago chain specializes in bowling, bocce, and wood-fired pizza. (Orlando Weekly

🍕 Did you eat yet?... Talking all things delicious with foodie, Emi Newman

Meet Emi Newman, the face behind all the delicious Central Florida foodie pics over on her page, @emibefeasting on Instagram. (📸: @emibefeasting)

In this week’s installment of, “Did you eat yet?”, we’re sitting down with Emi Newman, a local foodie who keeps us drooling on Instagram. We asked her about her absolute favorite meal in Orlando, where she’s taking her out-of-town guests to eat, and what she’s drinking at happy hour with her favorite Orlandoan.

🗣 First things first: Who are you? What's your day job? Who are you on the internet? I am originally from Pensacola, FL but moved to the Orlando area in January of 2020. I am a graduate student at UCF Rosen College with a background working in the sports industry. Having grown up in a family of foodies, I decided to finally put my food photos to work which has now become @emibefeasting! It has become a great way to share my love for food with others who feel the same.

🍽 In what neighborhood will we most likely find you chowing down? And why? You will usually find me chowing down in Audubon Park at East End Market. East End is home to so many great businesses like Domu, Dochi, Farm & Haus, Gideon's Bakehouse, Hinckley's Fancy Meats, and more! I also love that every weekend they have vendors in the courtyard. It's a great way to support local businesses!

🤫 What's the best-kept secret in the Orlando area? (Don't worry, we'll only tell everyone reading this.) Hmm, I'm not sure how much of a secret it is these days, but it has to be Fresco Cucina Italiana. Located off of Turkey Lake in the Dr. Phillips area, it is a family-owned, authentic Italian spot with the best Aracine Siciliane I've ever had. They have amazing wood-fired pizzas and a Fiochetti Pear dish that is to die for.

📰 What is one Orlando food-related news story that you think people need to be paying more attention to? H-Mart is coming to Orlando. The first location in the state of Florida and I am so excited that they saw an opportunity here in Orlando!

🍕 Your favorite movie star calls and asks to come over for dinner. What're you serving? If Ryan Reynolds calls and wants to come over for dinner, I am definitely going to grab him some pizza from Anthony's. I hear his favorite cheat meal is pizza.

🍸 Your calendar opens up and you get one happy hour with an Orlandoan of your choice. Who's it going to be? Why? Where are you meeting them? And what are you drinking? Daniel Tosh, because I know it would be one of the most eventful happy hours of my life. We're meeting at the AC Sky Bar for a Sunset Margarita.

Want more where this came from? We don’t blame you. Emi’s got some sweet recs, and great photos to accompany ‘em. Head here for our extended interview and find out what would be Emi’s last meal in Orlando, her go-to takeout order, her hands-down favorite Orlando dish, and more.

One more thing

Did any of our readers follow the Are Publix Chicken Tender Subs on Sale Twitter account? The guy behind it, a former UCF grad, had amassed over 40k followers on the social media site by sharing when the famous, possibly overrated (depending on who you ask), sandwiches would go on sale.

In recent months, he started a text-messaging notification service where you could enter your phone number and be alerted of said sales. Since then, it seems the grocery store giant put a halt to his operations and the account has gone dark (enter ominous music)...

That’s it for the news you can chew on today. I’ll be back to your regularly scheduled programming tomorrow and a Throwback Thursday piece for ya, then on Friday, I’ll return with some feel-good news.

Enjoy yourselves out there ‘til we meet again.
